Arizona State wins Big 12 Tournament
OKLAHOMA CITY – Texas Tech dropped the Big 12 Championship game to Arizona State by a score of 4-0 on Saturday. The Sun Devils used a big third inning and good pitching to take down the Red Raiders and win their first Big 12 Tournament.
Coming into the game, the Red Raiders had not given up a run in the Big 12 Tournament over its last five games and had a streak of 33.0 scoreless innings. Tech swept the Sun Devils in the regular season to clinch the Big 12 Regular Season title as Arizona State returned the favor in the postseason.
Arizona State's All-American pitcher Kenzie Brown had her stuff working today as she totaled nine strikeouts and allowed just two hits. The defense behind her made some good plays as well to complete the shutout.
Taylor Pannell and Logan Halleman picked up the lone hits for the Red Raiders, Pannell a double in the second and Halleman a single in the bottom of the seventh. NiJaree Canady pitched well, striking out nine batters and allowing just one earned run through 6.2 innings. Kaitlyn Terry reached on a hit by pitch and pitched 0.2 innings with a strikeout.
How it Happened:
The Red Raiders had a few chances on offense to score runs in the first and second innings. Tech worked two walks with two outs in the first and Terry lined a ball up the middle but a great defensive play by the Sun Devils shortstop ended the inning. Pannell led off the second inning with a double, but back-to-back strikeouts took the momentum away.
The Sun Devils put up four runs, three unearned, in the top of the third inning thanks to three home runs. Arizona State attacked early in the counts, and it worked out in their favor as they finished the game with nine hits, five of which came in that third inning offensive outburst.
UP NEXT: Tech will await its NCAA Regional opponents with the selection show tomorrow at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
