Texas Tech defeated Marist 10-3 on Friday night after weather dela
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 11-seeded Red Raiders took their opening NCAA Regional game against Marist 10-3 on Friday night in a game that started 50 minutes late and had an almost two-hour weather delay. Mia Williams got her 20th stolen base and became the first Red Raider in program history to have 20 stolen bases and 20 home runs in a single season.
Tech (53-6) recorded 12 hits and just one home run but stole seven bases, coming one shy of its program record for stolen bases in a single game. Logan Halleman led the charge with three stolen bases while Mihyia Davis recorded her 36th stolen base of the season, tying the single-season program record. Taylor Pannell became the seventh Red Raider to reach double-digit home runs after blasting a two-run shot in the third inning to break open the game.
Kaitlyn Terry improved to 23-1 in the circle after tossing 4.0 innings allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out five batters. After giving up two hits in the first inning, Terry allowed just two baserunners – both via walks – the rest of her outing. Samantha Lincoln earned her first save of the season after going 3.0 innings and striking out four batters while allowing just two runs. Lincoln allowed just one baserunner in the final two innings she pitched while striking out three.
Marist (37-20) was led by its two senior stars in Peyton Pusey and Haley Ahr who combined for two of the team's three runs via runs and RBI. Marist gave away a few run as they recorded four errors which allowed runners to advance and even score in some situations.
How it Happened:
The Red Foxes came out with some confidence in its first visit to Lubbock since 2020 and struck first as they led off the game with a single off a bunt by Pusey and then got a two-out single to left field to jump on Tech early. Terry responded quickly in the circle though, striking out the next batter to bring the bats up.
The Red Raiders responded with a two-out RBI of their own after Terry walked and advanced to second on a ground ball. Burns delivered the clutch hit on a 3-2 count and roped a ball right back up the middle to make it 1-1.
Terry was settled in after that first inning, going three-up three-down in the second before Tech grew its lead thanks to some chaos on the base paths. Halleman got on base with two outs thanks to an excellent bunt for a hit. She promptly stole second and on two errant throws trying to get her out was able to come home. That kept the line moving as Davis singled, stole second and then scored as well on a double by Terry. Terry, who was at third base, scored after Mia Williams got a favorable bounce on an infield ground ball to pick up an RBI and make it 4-1.
Another zero was hung up on the board by Terry and the defense in the third as Pannell added to more runs on one swing, lasering a ball to left field to make it 6-1. Hailey Toney, Halleman and Davis all scored again on singles and an error to push Tech's lead to 9-1 going into the fourth.
Terry got two quick outs, but the weather had other ideas as a delay that would last 1:42 begun with two outs in the top of the fourth. After the delay, Terry walked a batter but then struck out the next one to keep the lead at 9-1. Tech had bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the fourth but were on able to capitalize.
Marist refused to be run-ruled as they added two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-out, two-strike double by Ahr to make it 9-3 and keep the game alive. Terry and Williams hit back-to-back doubles to add the final run of the game as Lincoln allowed just one baserunner through the final two innings she pitched, striking out three to secure the win.
UP NEXT: Red Raiders will play Ole Miss tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Tracy Sellers Field. TV is still to be determined.
