
Tech sets new conference win record after beating ASU

LUBBOCK, Texas – In an over three-hour match that saw five third sets and three tiebreakers, the No. 15-ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders outlasted the No. 33-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils, 4-2, on Friday evening at the McLeod Tennis Center. By getting this victory, the Lady Raiders set a new program record of conference wins with 11.
Texas Tech (18-2, 11-1 Big 12) won an important doubles point against Arizona State (12-8, 7-5 Big 12), making it the team's 18th of the season. At court two, Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Haliey Murphy made quick work of Sara Svetac and Lily Taylor, winning it by a 6-2 score. Then, No. 6-ranked Avelina Sayfetdinova and Mariia Hlahola clinched the point with a victory against Karin Altori and Patricija Spaka. Both teams broke one another's serve until the Lady Raider duo broke Arizona State's serve and held their own to claim it, 6-3.
The Sun Devils evened the match at 1-1 after Spaka defeated Hlahola at court three, 6-1, 7-6 (3). Murphy gave Tech back the 2-1 lead after getting a win at court five against Aiya Nupbay. After winning in commanding fashion in the first set, 6-2, Murphy would go up 5-1 in set two. But, the Sun Devil came back to claim it 7-5, forcing a third set. Murphy regained the momentum quick – earning a bagel, 6-0, to win the match.
Arizona State tied the match at 2-2 when No. 45-ranked Svetac overtook Sayfetdinova in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Dmitrichenko answered by picking up a top-50 win against No. 49-ranked Emilija Tverijonaite at court two. After winning the first set, 6-2, the Sun Devil evened it up with a 6-4 set two. Both players broke serve after serve, until Dmitrichenko took a 5-3 lead. Tverijonaite was able to win the next game, but the Lady Raider closed it out with a 6-4 win to make it 3-2.
It all came down to the last two courts, which were both fighting in third sets. Andreea Lila, who was taking on Taylor at court four, would earn the clincher with a three-set win. In set one, both players went back-and-forth, going into a tiebreaker where Lila got the 7-6 (4) win. Then, Taylor tied it up when she took set two, 7-5. Lila jumped out to a 4-0 lead in set three, but the Sun Devil won three straight games to make it 4-3. Lila answered by breaking Taylor's serve to hold a 5-3 advantage. Then, Taylor would lead 30-0 and 40-30 in the following game before the Lady Raider won two consecutive points for the 6-3 win.
At court six, Jermine Sherif and Altori were locked in a battle, After falling, 4-6, in set one, Sherif forced a third set tiebreaker with a 6-1 set two score, leading 4-3 in the breaker when the match went unfinished.
Up next, Texas Tech hosts the No. 30 Arizona Wildcats on Sunday at 11 a.m. for senior day at the McLeod Tennis Center. If Texas Tech wins, the Lady Raiders will be crowned the Big 12 regular season champions.
