AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 28-ranked and 2-seeded Texas Tech Lady Raiders advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the last six seasons after overtaking the No. 36-ranked and 3-seeded Yale Bulldogs, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Texas Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (19-10) began the match by winning the doubles point against Yale (19-4). At court two, Mariia Hlahola and Elena Daskalova recorded a dominant win over Julia Werdiger and Angela Huang, 6-1, for the early advantage. Then, the duo of Andreea Lila and Ella Brownback earned a come-from-behind victory over Erin Ha and Shyla Aggarwal to clinch the point. The Lady Raider pair went down 0-3 before rattling off six-straight games for a 6-3 victory to give Tech the 1-0 lead.
Texas Tech jumped out to a 2-0 advantage when Yekaterina Dmitrichenko defeated Leena Friedman at court two. Dmitrichenko went up 2-0 in the first set until the Bulldog tied it up at 2-all. They would go back and forth until Dmitrichenko won the first set, 6-4. In the following set, Dmitrichenko led 4-1, then only gave up one more game for a 6-2 win.
Over at court five, Havana Kadi battled her way to a win over Ha. In set one, the Bulldog led by a 3-0 score before Kadi won four of the next five games to make it 4-4. Ha held serve for a 5-4 lead, but the Lady Raider won three-consecutive games for a 7-5 first set win. In the next set, both players traded games until Kadi took the set by a 6-4 score to make it 3-0 in Tech's favor.
Clinching the match was Hailey Murphy at court one over Orly Ogilvy. Murphy went down 2-5 in the first set, but fought her way back after claiming the next five games for a 7-5 victory. In the second set, Ogilvy led 2-5 before the Lady Raider once again tied it at 5-all. She would force a tiebreaker, where she dominated by a 7-6 (1) score.
Right when Murphy clinched the match for Tech, Werdiger defeated Brownback at court four, 6-4, 6-4, to give Yale one point in the contest. Over at court three, Daskalova forced a third set over Aggarwal in gritty fashion. After dropping the first set, 3-6, Daskalova went down 2-5 in the following set until she won five-straight games for a 7-5 second set victory.
