Tech bows out in second round to No. 9 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Despite winning the doubles point and earning a singles win over the No. 6-ranked player in the country, the No. 9 Texas Longhorns claimed the match, 4-1, over the No. 28 Texas Tech Lady Raiders in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Texas Tennis Center. Â
Texas Tech (19-11) opened the match by winning the doubles point against Texas (19-7). At court one, Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy earned a ranked win over No. 71 Anastasia Abbagnato and Elizabeth Ionescu. After both teams got early breaks, they would each follow by trading games until Tech got a break to lead at 4-3. The Lady Raiders won two more games out of the next three to earn a 6-4 victory over Texas.
Over at court three, Ella Brownback and Andreea Lila fought hard against Eszter Meri and Salma Drugdova, but the Longhorn pair would win by a 6-4 score. Tech would need Elena Daskalova and Mariia Hlahola to win at court two over Kate Mansfield and Carmen Herea in order to claim the doubles point. The Lady Raider duo went down 0-3 to start out, but battled back to tie the match at 3-3. Both teams held serve until Tech broke Texas' serve to lead 6-5. They would hold the next game to clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 win.
Texas jumped out to a 3-1 lead after claiming three singles matches in a row. First at court three, No. 57 Meri defeated Daskalova, 6-0, 6-1. Then at court one, No. 3 Herea beat Murphy by a 6-1, 6-4 score. Over at court four, No. 104 Ionescu took down Brownback, 6-0, 6-1, to extend the Longhorn advantage.
Texas Tech earned a point at court two after Dmitrichenko earned a comeback win over No. 6-ranked Abbagnato. In the first set, both players went back and forth until a tiebreaker, where the Longhorn won 7-6 (3). Dmitrichenko would force a third after winning set two by a 6-3 score. Dmitirchenko dominated in the final set, only dropping one game en route to a 6-1 score and the best singles win of her career.
The Longhorns clinched the match at court five after Mansfield beat Havana Kadi in a tough, three-set match, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5. Hlahola was also in a third set with Drugdova at court six, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 0-1, when her match went unfinished. The Lady Raiders finish the season with 19 wins and a berth into the NCAA Second Round for the fifth time in six years.
