
Lady Raiders win Big 12 regular-season championship

LUBBOCK, Texas – It was a near sweep to give the No. 15-ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders their fourth overall Big 12 regular-season title after taking down the No. 30 Arizona Wildcats, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center. Â
Texas Tech (19-2, 12-1 Big 12) started out hot in doubles, claiming the point against Arizona (18-9, 8-5 Big 12). At court one, No. 6 Avelina Sayfetdinova and Mariia Hlahola earned a ranked win against No. 37 Danielle Tuhten and Josie Userreau in commanding fashion, 6-2.
Then, Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif clinched the point at court three over Zoya Chulak and Belen Nevenhoven. The Lady Raider duo was down 0-2, before rattling off four of the next five games for a 4-3 lead. They would win by a 6-4 score to give Tech the 1-0 lead. At court two, Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy were leading No. 65-ranked Midori Castillo-Meza and Martyna Ostrzygalo, 5-3, when it went unfinished.
In singles, the Lady Raiders won five first sets en route to their fourth Big 12 title and first since 2017. First, Murphy went to work at court five, earning a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tanvi Narendran to make it 2-0. Arizona was able to put a point on the board with a victory at court three.
Tech was in the driver's seat after that – getting its next point at court six when Sherif took down Teja Tirunelveli in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Dmitrichenko recorded her second-straight ranked singles win to clinch the victory for the Lady Raiders after defeating No. 123 Castillo at court two. In the first set, Dmitrichenko was down 4-5 before breaking Castillo's serve, then won two more games after to claim it, 7-5. She would only give up one game in the following set, 6-1, to clinch the victory. Texas Tech now holds a program record of 12 conference wins and earned its fourth Big 12 title since 2012.
Up next, Texas Tech will be the 1-seed at the Big 12 Tournament in Waco, Texas next Friday, April 18 at 10 a.m. They play the winner between the 8-seed and either the 9 or 16-seeds.
