
Tech advances to Big 12 Championship semifinals

WACO, Texas – Highlighted by a gritty doubles point, the No. 15 Texas Tech Lady Raiders earned a 4-1 win over the No. 39 Kansas Jayhawks in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at the Hurd Tennis Center. In doing so, the Lady Raiders advanced to their second straight Big 12 semifinals.
Doubles was a grind from start to finish as 1-seeded Texas Tech (20-2) claimed the point to take a lead over 8-seeded Kansas (14-10). At court one, No. 7 Avelina Sayfetdinova and Mariia Hlahola were battling No. 34 Heike Janse Van Vuuren and Gracie Mulville. Tech went down 0-2 before rattling off two-straight games to tie it. It went back-and-forth until 4-4 when Kansas pulled ahead to win it, 6-4.
At court two, Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy got a comeback win over Jasmine Adams and Yerke Arystanbekova. After Kansas took a 5-3 lead, Tech would tie it at 5-all after holding and breaking serve. They then won the next two games for the 7-5 victory.
It all came down to court three for the point where Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif were taking on Kyoka Kubo and Anna Putilina. The Lady Raiders went out to an early 5-2 lead before Kansas tied it at 5-5. Tech would break Kansas' serve and save a break point in the following game to win the match and clinch the doubles point, 7-5.
Murphy continued her heroics into singles, after winning a quick match over Meriem Ben Ezzedine at court five in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, for a 2-0 match lead. However, Hlahola would fall to Van Vuuren at court three, 6-4, 6-2, as Kansas cut the lead in half.
Lila would give Tech a 3-1 advantage after defeating Arystanbekova at court four. In the first set, Lila took a 3-1 lead before Arystanbekova tied it at 3-all. The Lady Raider answered with the next three games to take it, 6-3. In the following set, Lila went down 0-3 before rallying off four of the next five games to tie it at 4-4. She would hold and break serve to give Tech another point with a 6-4 set.
The Lady Raiders got the clinching point at court six, where Sherif overtook Putilina in three. Sherif was able to win the first set easily, 6-2, before dropping the next one by a 6-4 score. Taking a 2-0 lead in the third set, Sherif would lose three consecutive games as Putilina led 3-2. Sherif and the Jayhawk then broke one another's serves before Sherif clinched it with a 6-4 set win.
Up next, Texas Tech will play the winner of 4-seeded Baylor and 5-seeded Arizona in the Big 12 Tournament semifinals on Saturday at 10 a.m.
