No. 2/4 Red Raiders comeback falls short in final inning

LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 2/4 Texas Tech (49-5, 20-3) fell to Baylor (28-24, 10-13) 8-7 on Friday night at Tracy Sellers Field. Tech went up 6-1 going into the fifth inning before a four-run top of the fifth and a three-run top of the seventh propelled the Bears to their 10^th conference win of the season.

The Red Raiders top of the order was strong behind Mia Williams and Jasmyn Burns who each had a home run and three RBI. Jackie Lis and Lauren Allred finished with multiple hits as well, Allred added in the other RBI. Hailey Toney and Taylor Pannell both got hits while Kaitlyn Terry worked two walks. Mihyia Davis had a tough day at the plate but made a phenomenal catch, robbing a home run in center field in the fifth inning.

Samantha Lincoln started the game and pitched well for 4.0 innings, allowing three runs and striking out two batters. NiJaree Canady, who is now 20-4 in the circle, struck out six through 3.0 innings and gave up three runs, none of which were earned.

How it Happened:
The scoring started in the third inning when the Bears strung together two hits to take an early 1-0 lead. Tech responded quickly with a four-run bottom of the third after Williams drove home Terry who walked and stole second base. With two runners on, Burns launched her 15^th homer of the season to put Tech up 4-1 and give them momentum.

Williams added two more runs to make it 6-1 on her 20^th home run of the season, tying the program record for homers and RBI in a single season as she recorded her 70^th on the year. Baylor came right and launched two homers, one a solo shot and the other a three-run blast to make it 6-5 and flip the momentum into their dugout.

Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth before the Bears grabbed the lead in the top of the seventh thanks to three runs including a two-run single that made it 8-6. Tech looked to have a comeback in order as the first three batters all reached and Allred drove in Burns to make it 8-7 with no outs and two runners on. The Bears got a quick strikeout before walking Toney and making the bases loaded. Tech grounded into a fielder's choice which and then struck out to end the game in a frustrating loss for the Red Raiders.
