NiJaree Canady tosses first career perfect game in Red Raiders 8-0 win on Saturday
LUBBOCK, Texas – NiJaree Canady tossed her first career perfect in her final regular season game as a college athlete as the Red Raiders were firing on all cylinders for senior day, winning 8-0 over Baylor in five innings. No. 2/4 Texas Tech (50-5, 21-3) rebounded in a big way as they became the first team in the country to reach 50 wins and set a new program record for conference wins in a season with 21.
Baylor (28-25, 10-14) got six hits on Canady last night but failed to get a runner on base as Canady responded with nine strikeouts and had the Bears hitters completely guessing at the plate. Canady is now 21-4 on the year after needing just 63 pitches in her perfect outing. That was the sixth perfect game in program history, the last one was thrown by Samantha Lincoln last year against UMass.
Jasmyn Burns continued to see the ball, blasting a grand slam in the first inning and drawing a walk. Burns now has 15 homers and 50 RBI on the year. Lauren Allred also took one deep as she finished 2-for-3 with two RBI thanks to her eighth home run of the season.. Kaitlyn Terry and Hailey Toney got back on track, both going 2-for-3 as Toney hit two doubles and recorded two RBI. Mihyia Davis, Mia Williams and Taylor Pannell all recorded hits and runs as Tech secured the win.
Gerry Glasco improved to 67-0 in conference series and is now 42-7 in Big 12 play over his two seasons at the helm. Pannell is now riding a 14-game on base streak after recording a single as Canady dropped her ERA down to 1.30 on the year.
How it Happened:
Canady wasted no time settling in as she struck out the side to start the game. The offense fed off that as they loaded the bases, after Jackie Lis drew one of her two walks on the day, for Burns who took the first pitch and then launched the second one over the left field bleachers.
All of Canady's pitches were working from the start leading to a ton of swings and misses as eight of her nine strikeouts came swinging. Victoria Valdez was exceptional behind the plate today for Canady, framing pitches well and playing with infectious energy.
Canady continued to deal and struck out the side again in the top of the third and Allred responded with a two-run blast of her own over the right field bleachers to make it 6-0. The defense held firm behind Canady, and the offense added the final two runs off the game on a double from Toney.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will be the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 Tournament starting May 7 in Oklahoma City.
