Tech wins 10-1 in five innings on FS1 behind great performance of Terry
LUBBOCK, Texas – Kaitlyn Terry improved to 15-0 and hit her seventh homer of the season in No. 2 Texas Tech's 10-1 win over BYU (11-24, 2-9) on Friday night at Tracy Sellers Field. The Red Raiders (37-2, 13-1) now have 26 run-rule victories on the season, continuing to expand the record.
The bottom of the lineup made a big difference in the game for Tech. Desirae Spearman, Hailey Toney and Lauren Allred all went 2-for-3 and combined for six RBI. Spearman launched her ninth home run of the season during Tech's nine-run second inning. Toney drove in her two runs on a bases-loaded single – also in the second inning.
Terry helped her own cause with a three-run homer that made the game 5-0. Jasmyn Burns had a good day at the plate as well, getting a single to lead off the massive second inning and then later recording an RBI after drawing a bases-loaded walk.
How it Happened:
Terry got out of an early jam in the top of the second after both teams hung zeroes in the first. The Cougars got a single and drew a walk and then used a sac bunt to push those runners to second and third with just one out. Terry then worked back-to-back pop ups to get out of the inning unscathed and get the momentum in Tech's dugout leading to the big inning.
Burns led off with a single and two pitches later Spearman launched a homer over the left field fence to break the seal on a scoreless game. Allred doubled and Davis drew her second walk of the evening to set Terry up for a three-run homer. Mia Williams, Jackie Lis, Taylor Pannell and Burns drew four straight walks to bring another run across. Up 6-0, Spearman and Toney hit back-to-back singles to bring across three more runs and cap off a big inning.
Terry and company held the Cougars scoreless in the third before BYU used its second hit of the game to get across an unearned run. Allred got the run back for the Red Raiders after roping a double into right field that scored Toney who reached on a base hit and then recorded her 14th stolen base of the season.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will be back in action tomorrow against BYU noon.
