Tech welcomes in BYU for Easter weekend
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 2 Texas Tech (35-2, 11-1) will host BYU (11-22, 2-7) this weekend beginning on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Tracy Sellers Field. The Red Raiders will then have a nationally televised game on Friday at 6 p.m. with FS1 producing the broadcast before the series finale at noon on Saturday.
The Red Raiders are riding a 10-game win streak and have won all four of their conference series to this point including back-to-back series sweeps over No. 25 UCF and Iowa State. The Cougars have not had the season they hoped for up to this point, but played Tech tough last season in Provo, forcing a rubber match in the last regular season game of the year. BYU took games against Kansas and Oklahoma State as they have proven to be scrappy all year.
Tech is 6-3 all-time against BYU including a 2-1 series win over them last season and the year before that, both in Provo. This will be the Cougars first game in Lubbock having played three neutral site games before joining the Big 12.
Quick Hits:
Mihyia Davis is one of the most valuable players in the country and has been that way her whole career. Among active players she ranks first in hits (313), at-bats (765) and stolen bases (130). She also ranks third in runs (213) and third in games played (225). She is the only active player with 300 hits.
NiJaree Canady continues to make history as she is the first Red Raider to receive an AUSL Golden Ticket which symbolizes a college athlete being selected into the pro softball league. The reigning National Pitcher of the Year is 7 K's away from 1,000 for her career and is one of just two active players to have over 950 strikeouts. Canady had another good outing against Iowa State as she allowed just two hits and one run while striking out eight batters.
Kaitlyn "KT" Terry has been arguably the team's best player through the first 37 games of the season. She leads the team with a .538 batting average, which is also fourth best in the country, and also has a 1.86 ERA and a perfect 14-0 record. Terry has found her role in the two-hole for Tech's offense.
Gerry Glasco is now 63-0 in conference series dating back to his time at Louisiana. The head coach has lost the first game of a series 10 times and has comeback to win each time. Tech looked to be in jeopardy of breaking that streak after a tough loss to Arizona in game one, but retaliated in a big way with back-to-back run-rule victories.
Jackie Lis has been on fire at the plate over the last few weeks. The senior hit .818 last week and got out just once over the three-game Iowa State series as she was named the Big 12 Player of the Week. She has the 7th most home runs amongst active players with 52.
