Canady eclipsed 1,000 career strikeouts in 11-1 win
LUBBOCK, Texas – NiJaree Canady became the 102nd pitcher in NCAA history to eclipse the prestigious 1,000 career strikeout mark on Thursday night at Tracy Sellers Field as No. 2 Texas Tech defeated BYU 11-1 in six innings. Jackie Lis hit two home runs and had six RBI as the Red Raiders (36-2, 12-1) used just five hits to score their runs.
Lis is now tied for second on the team in home runs with 10 and has 42 RBI, also good for second on the team. Mihyia Davis, Mia Williams and Lauren Allred got the other three Red Raider hits. Taylor Pannell had two RBI while Kaitlyn Terry drew three walks and also had an RBI. As a team, Tech drew 10 walks on the night and had 10 RBI.
The Cougars (11-23, 2-8) kept the game within reach for a while and scored the first run of the evening in the opening inning thanks to back-to-back hits. Those hits, however, would be the only ones Canady would give up to BYU all night as she struck out 11 batters in 73 pitches.
How it Happened:
BYU got an unearned run to open up the game after back-to-back hits but that would be the only offense they mustered up all game as Canady was dominant in her 14th victory of the year.
Down 1-0, the Red Raiders responded quickly but did after loading the bases with three straight walks. Davis tied the game up after a wild pitch went to the back stop and Tech then took a 3-1 lead on groundouts from Lis and Pannell.
Tech added one more run in the third inning after Lis hustled out an inside-the-park homer after the Cougars' right fielder fell trying to go for the ball. Pannell added to Tech's lead on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and Canady kept mowing down batters with the Red Raiders up 5-1 going into the sixth.
The Red Raiders worked two walks and then loaded the bases on a bunt from Davis. Terry and Williams then walked back-to-back to make it a 7-1 game and bring up the hottest bat on the team in Lis. Lis, usually a patient hitter, took the first ball she saw over the left field fence to call game.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will be back in action tomorrow against BYU at 6 p.m. on FS1.
