Tech wins 12-2 in five innings in first game back at home
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 2/4 Texas Tech (48-4, 19-2) defeated Tarleton State (34-19, 12-3) 12-2 in five innings on Tuesday night behind five home runs and solid pitching by Kaitlyn Terry and Samantha Lincoln. Terry picked up her 20th win of the season and has now won 20 games in three consecutive seasons. Her and NiJaree Canady both have 20 wins now, making them the first duo in Texas Tech history to each have 20 wins.
Mia Williams, Jasmyn Burns and Terry each homered once and Lauren Allred homered twice to make up five of Tech's 10 hits in the games. 10 of the Red Raiders 12 runs came via the long ball. Allred now has seven homers on the year and tied her career-high for RBI in a game with five.
Desirae Spearman went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI while Taylor Pannell added a single up the middle and scored two runs. Hailey Toney was solid again at shortstop and had team-first at-bats drawing two walks and recording a sacrifice bunt. Lincoln threw a perfect fifth inning recording a strikeout and two groundouts.
How it Happened:
Terry got three of her five strikeouts in the first inning, fanning all three batters she faced. Williams got the offense off to a strong start with a double and two batters later Terry drove her home with her 10th home run of the season. Terry is now the sixth Red Raider to reach double digit home runs; Tech had just one all of last season.
Tech added another two-run homer off the bat of Allred to score Spearman who singled two at-bats before. The Texans got some runners on via walks and two hits and pushed to runs across, one unearned, but that would be the only inning they'd cause trouble in.
Tech responded with a big third inning capped by back-to-back homers from Allred and Williams. Spearman started the scoring by driving in Pannell on a single to left field and with runners on first and second Allred took a 3-1 pitch opposite field to make it 8-2. Tarleton St. made a call to the bullpen after that and two pitches into her outing Williams welcomed her with a touring shot to center field, her 19th of the season and one away from tying the program single-season record.
The Red Raiders added three more runs in the top of the fourth for some insurance thanks to a double steal by Terry and Pannell and then a two-run blast by Burns that landed high in the left-field bleachers. Lincoln delivered the final three outs on just 15 pitches as Tech clinched its 34th run-rule victory of the year.
UP NEXT: No. 2/4 Red Raiders will host Baylor this weekend starting on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Tracy Sellers Field.
