No. 2/4 Red Raiders take game one against Baylor 5-0
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 2/4 Texas Tech (49-4, 20-2) took game one against Baylor (27-24, 9-13) 5-0 on Thursday night at Tracy Sellers Field. Kaitlyn Terry was masterful, earning her 21st win of the season and striking out nine while Jasmyn Burns delivered a big hit in the bottom of the sixth to give Tech some insurance late.
Terry is now 21-1 on the season after allowing just one hit and one walk and striking out nine batters through 7.0 innings of work. Terry threw 102 pitches – the first time all season she's eclipsed 100 pitches in the circle – as she tossed her sixth shutout of the year.
Burns launched her 14th homer of the season on the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the sixth. The junior catcher is now 44 RBI on the season. Mia Williams recorded her 18th double of the season moving up to second in program history for doubles in a season behind Kim Martinez who had 21 in 1997. Taylor Pannell went 2-for-2 with an RBI on a sacrifice fly while Lauren Allred added the other hit on an RBI single up the middle.
Jackie Lis walked in all three plate appearances, scoring two runs as the Red Raiders got eight free passes and struck out zero times.
How it Happened:
Both team's leadoff hitters walked to start the game but the scoring did not start until the bottom of the second when Tech loaded the bases on back-to-back walks and a hit by pitch. Pannell hit a sac fly to right field to score Lis from third but that would the only scoring of the inning as the Bears got an out on the base paths and then forced a ground ball.
Baylor got its lone hit of the game in the fourth inning on a two-out single and Tech got its first hits of the game in the bottom of the inning. After Williams and Lis drew back-to-back walks, Allred smoked a ball up the middle that allowed Williams to score from second. Pannell got an infield single the next at-bat to load the bases but the Bears got a timely double play to get them out of the inning.
Terry kept mowing down hitters and Tech would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to give her some insurance late. Burns launched her 14th homer of the year over the right field fence after Williams led off the inning with a double and Lis drew her third walk of the evening. Pannell got Tech's final hit of the game on a single up the middle with Allred on first but another Baylor double play kept the inning from getting out of hand as Tech took game one 5-0.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will host Baylor tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Tracy Sellers Field.
