Tech completes sweep of No. 24/RV Arizona State to secure Big 12 title
TEMPE, Arizona – No. 2/5 Texas Tech (47-4, 19-2) clinched its second straight Big 12 Regular Season title on Sunday afternoon after completing the sweep over No. 24/RV Arizona State with a 7-1 victory. NiJaree Canady recorded her 20th win of the season as Mia Williams and Taylor Pannell each hit a homer.
Mihyia Davis, Williams and Jasmyn Burns all had multiple hits with Williams leading the way going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Pannell added two RBI on her eight home run of the season while Hailey Toney and Victoria Valdez tacked on one RBI each.
Canady went 5.0 innings, allowing just three hits while striking out four Sun Devils (35-16, 8-12) and allowing just one unearned run. Samantha Lincoln went the final 2.0 inning allowing just one hit while striking out two as she put the finishing touches on a big win for the Red Raiders.
The Red Raiders are now the only current Big 12 members to have multiple Big 12 Softball regular season titles and will be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament beginning on May 7 at OGE Field at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
How it Happened:
Tech got a double from Jackie Lis, who was just announced as an addition to the AUSL players pool for next season, in the top of the first inning but didn't get anything from it. Arizona State got a walk, but it would be nullified as Valdez through the runner out at second after they tried to steal.
The Red Raiders opened the scoring in the top of the second with a single by burns through the right side to move Desirae Spearman, who walked the at-bat prior, to second base. Toney delivered with a double to score Spearman and Valdez scored a pinch-running Makayla Garcia from third on a ground out to shortstop. The Sun Devils got one run back after a pair of walks and an error but that would be their only run of the day.
Pannell homered to left in the third and after two scoreless innings by both side Williams homered in to open up the sixth inning to make it a 5-1 game. Davis, who caused havoc on the base paths all weekend, scored after stealing third and forcing an errant throw that allowed her to cross home. Williams singled up the middle a couple at-bats later to score Kaitlyn Terry to complete the scoring.
UP NEXT: No. 2/5 Red Raiders will return home to take on Tarleton State on Tuesday before hosting its regular season finale against Baylor starting on Thursday.
