Lis, Canady shine in game one win
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Jackie Lis hit two homers and a triple while NiJaree Canady improved to 16-2 in the circle while striking out seven in the No. 1 Red Raiders 10-2 win over Utah (26-14-1, 4-8-1) in game one on Friday night.
Texas Tech (39-2, 15-1) used four home runs, two doubles and two triples as they powered past the Utes with 12 hits. Canady went 5.2 innings and allowed just two runs while striking out seven and also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Samantha Lincoln pitched the final 1.1 innings and sat down all four batters she faced, two via strikeout.
Kaitlyn Terry, like Lis, continues to tear up opposing pitchers as she went 3-for-4 with an RBI. She had two singles and a little league home run that was scored a triple as she scored on an errant throw from the outfield.
Mia Williams and Mihyia Davis both hit home runs as well. Williams now sits at 15 on the season to lead the team with Lis right behind her at 12.
How it Happened:
The Utes gave Tech an early run after a pop up in the infield was dropped which allowed Williams to score from second and give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead. Canady was dialed early, striking out two of the first four batters she faced.
Canady got things started on offense in the third inning with a double and Logan Halleman, who was pinch running for the All-American, scored on a single up the middle from Terry. Williams drove her home with a rocket over the left field fence and four pitches later Lis sent one deep to center field to make it a 5-0 ballgame.
Terry's little-league homer made it 6-0 going into the sixth before Canady drove in Hailey Toney on a double down the right field line and Davis homered to center to score Desirae Spearman, who was running for Canady.
The Utes broke its scoreless stretch and made it 9-2 and became the first team in seven games to play seven innings of softball against Tech. Lis added another home run for good measure and Lincoln came in for the final four outs to get Tech its 15th Big 12 win of the season.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will continue its series with the Utes tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT.
