Tech will play six games in six days starting with a series against Utah
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 1 Texas Tech (38-2, 14-1) will return to the road this weekend as they face Utah in a three-game series before playing Utah State, UTSA and Texas State in the three days following. The series against Utes (25-13-1, 4-7-1) begins on Friday at 6 p.m. CT.
The Red Raiders swept Utah last season in Lubbock and are 6-4 all-time against them. After Friday night's game they will play the Utes at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday and noon on Sunday. Tech will then make the trip to Logan, Utah and play Utah State at 3 p.m. CT on Monday before going back to Texas and playing UTSA on Tuesday and Texas State on Wednesday, both games at 6 p.m.
Tech moved up to No. 1 in the rankings for the second this season after extending its winning streak to 13, second longest active streak in the country. NiJaree Canady was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season after eclipsing 1,000 career strikeouts and improving to 15-2 on the season.
Quick Hits:
Mihyia Davis is one of the most valuable players in the country and has been that way her whole career. Among active players she ranks first in hits (316), at-bats (773) and stolen bases (131). She also ranks second in runs (218) and third in games played (228). She is the only active player with 300 hits.
NiJaree Canady continues to make history. The reigning National Pitcher of the Year eclipsed 1,000 strikeouts for her career after striking out against BYU. Canady is just one of two active players with 1,000 career K's and the only active player with 1,000 K's and 90 wins. Canady had another good outing against BYU allowing just one unearned run and just two hits through 6.0 innings of work.
Kaitlyn "KT" Terry has been arguably the team's best player so far this season. She leads the team with a .525 batting average, which is also fourth best in the country, and also has a 1.73 ERA and a perfect 15-0 record. Terry also set the school record with a 24-game hit streak and is currently riding a 28-game on base streak.
Gerry Glasco is now 64-0 in conference series dating back to his time at Louisiana. The head coach has lost the first game of a series 10 times and has comeback to win each time. Tech looked to be in jeopardy of breaking that streak after a tough loss to Arizona in game one but retaliated in a big way with back-to-back run-rule victories.
Jackie Lis has been on fire at the plate over the last few weeks. The senior hit an inside-the-park home run and a grand slam in the same game against BYU a week after earning Big 12 Player of the Week honors.
Mia Williams currently leads the team in doubles (14), RBI (49) and homers (14). Her doubles number is top 15 in the country, and she has 108 total bases on the season, putting her top 25 in the country and atop Big 12.
The Red Raiders are already up to 27 run-rule victories this season. The program record was 20 and they had 14 all of last season. A new program record for shutouts in a season was set last year as Tech had 26 shutout victories. They have 12 already this season.
