Tech takes down ACU 9-1 behind seven-run inning
ABILENE, Texas – No. 2 Texas Tech (35-2, 11-1) defeated Abilene Christian (4-28, 1-2) 9-1 on Tuesday evening at Poly Wells Field. Kaitlyn Terry improved to 14-0 and pushed her hit streak to 24 games on the season as Hailey Toney hit her fifth homer of the season in the Red Raider's win.
Terry allowed just three hits and one run while striking out eight batters over 4.0 inning of work. NiJaree Canady recorded the last three outs of the game all via strikeout as she sits just seven away from 1,000 for her career now.
Big 12 Player of the Week Jackie Lis continued her hot stretch of play as she went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI. Mia Williams went 1-for-3 with two RBI while Mihyia Davis, Taylor Pannell and Lauren Allred all recorded hits as well.
How it Happened:
Davis and Terry lead off the game with back-to-back singles and each stole a second base to manufacture the first run across for the Red Raiders. With Terry on third, Lis roped a ground-rule double down the left field line to give Tech a 2-0 lead. Terry struck out two of the three batters she faced in the bottom of the first to get things going.
ACU got a two-out single in the second inning after holding Tech scoreless thanks to a double play, but Terry struck out two more Wildcats to keep the lead at 2-0 going into the third.
The Red Raiders made up for the scoreless inning with seven runs in the third capped off by a two-run homer off the bat of Toney, her fifth of the season, as the Tech batted around the order. Williams and Lis both recorded two RBI singles in the inning as well and Terry added two more strikeouts.
The Wildcats held Tech scoreless in the fourth and got two hits to lead off their half of the fourth which led to a run on a sacrifice fly which was sandwiched in between two more strikeouts from Terry. The Red Raiders were held scoreless again in the fifth as Canady closed out the game with the final three outs to secure the win.
UP NEXT: Tech is back home as they host a three-game series against BYU starting on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Tracy Sellers Field.
