Red Raiders break single-season home run record as they improve to 34-2
Samantha Lincoln posted five strikeouts and improved to 7-0 on the season after pitching all five innings. The defense behind her was good as they finished the weekend with zero errors.
Jackie Lis was on fire this weekend, getting out just once after going 3-for-4 today with a pair of singles and the team's 75th home run of the season which set a new single-season record for the Red Raiders. Mihyia Davis had a big day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with 5 RBI thanks to a pair of home runs.
Hailey Toney and Kaitlyn Terry hit homers as well. Terry finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI while Toney went 2-for-3 with three RBI thanks to a three-run homer in the chaotic second inning. Desirae Spearman knocked in two runs with a double down the left field line as Mia Williams, Jasmyn Burns and Taylor Pannell all picked up hits as well.
How it Happened:
Iowa State took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run but Terry tied it up just a few at-bats later as she lined a ball over the left field fence for her sixth homer of the season. Lincoln held the Cyclones scoreless in the second before Tech blew the game open in the bottom of the inning.
Burns got things started with a single through the left side. Toney put a ball in play after Spearman walked and scored a pinch-running Makayla Garcia after an error by Iowa State's pitcher on a throw to third base trying to get the lead runner. Lauren Allred reached the next at-bat on an error but still recorded an RBI after Spearman reached home. Davis reached on a single and the third straight Cyclones error scored two more runs. With two outs and the bases loaded Spearman, in her second at-bat of the inning, lined a ball down the left field line to score two more runs. Toney cleared the bases with a three-run homer and after Allred drew a walk, Davis hit a two-run homer to right field to give Tech a dozen runs in the inning and give the Red Raiders a 13-1 lead.
The Cyclones didn't go away easily as they responded with a grand slam in the top of the third and a scoreless inning on defense, but Tech put any notions of a comeback away after a three-run homer by Davis followed by a solo shot from Lis added four more runs to the lead and making it 17-5 going into the final inning. Iowa State got a solo homer but nothing else as the Red Raiders got their 34th win of the season and 11th win in Big 12 play.
UP NEXT: Tech travel to Abilene on Tuesday for a game against ACU at 5 p.m.
