Kaitlyn Terry records the second no-hitter of the day for Tech
LUBBOCK, Texas – Earlier today NiJaree Canady became the first player in program history to throw two no-hitters during their time as a Red Raider. Canady held distinction for about five hours as Kaitlyn Terry recorded her second no-hitter of the season as No. 2 Texas Tech defeated Detroit Mercy 9-0 in five innings.
This was the third no-hitter for the Red Raiders (20-1) – a new program record - in the last five games. Tech also set a program record for most consecutive hit less innings at 11.0 and counting, and it is the first time in program history that Tech has had consecutive no-hitters.
Terry went 5.0 innings and struck out five batters while throwing just 65 pitches in her no-hit effort as she improved to 8-0 on the season. The Red Raiders defense had no errors and a double play behind the lefty as they watched their pitcher throw the 13th no-hitter in program history.
Mihyia Davis and Taylor Pannell both went 2-for-3 with an RBI a piece while Mia Williams recorded two RBI without recording a hit as she hit two sacrifice flies. Terry helped her own cause at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a two-run double that put Tech up 3-0 in the first inning.
How it Happened:
The game started with a strikeout by Terry which set the tone for the rest of her outing. Davis led off the offense with a bunt single and stole second – she is now at 20 on the year and one away from already being in the record book again for stolen bases in a single season. Williams brought home Davis on a sacrifice fly to put the Red Raiders up 1-0.
Terry sat down the Titans in order and delivered two more runs on offense with an RBI double while the bases were loaded. Davis then scored Lauren Allred on a ground ball to make it 4-0.
The Titans got their only other base runner of the game on a lead off walk but Terry got back on track with a pair of strikeouts to end the frame. A bases-loaded walk by Jasmyn Burns and an RBI by Allred added two more runs to Tech's lead going into the fourth inning.
Williams and Jackie Lis both recorded sacrifice flies in the fourth and Pannell connected on a double to give Tech a 9-0 lead and eventual win.
UP NEXT: Tech end the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 11:30 a.m.
