Canady tosses one-hitter in her sixth win of the season
PALM SPRINGS, California – NiJaree Canady was stellar in the circle for the Red Raiders across two games today as she picked up a save and win and allowed just one hit. Texas Tech (15-1) defeated Cal State Fullerton 6-3 before beating San Diego State 5-0 on the third day of the Mary Nutter Classic.
Taylor Pannell left the yard again as she blasted a three-run shot to center field against Fullerton (6-8) which pushed Tech's lead to 4-0 against a scrappy Titans team. Pannell finished the game with five RBI after pushing across runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Lauren Allred got the opening run for Tech as she hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
Kaitlyn Terry struck out six batters as she improved to 5-0 on the season. The Titans got three runs on her in the third inning, but before and after that she was rock solid. Canady threw the last two innings of the game, coming in with the score at 5-3 to earn her second save of the season. The reigning National Pitcher of the Year faced six batters and struck out three of them as she put an end to game.
In the second game, Tech scored using some small ball tactics and didn't need much offense as Canady pitched an absolute gem, going 6.0 innings and striking out 11 batters while allowing just one hit.
Desirae Spearman got the scoring started for Tech in the second inning with a single up the middle. Terry got an RBI thanks to a successful bunt single in the next at-bat that pushed Timber Hensley across, who scored her first career run.
Lagi Quiroga got an RBI on a sacrifice fly and during the next at bat Hailey Toney scored on a wild pitch to make Tech's lead 4-0. The Red Raiders got their last run of the game on a single from Mihyia Davis in the fourth inning.
Canady continued to deal and shutdown the Aztecs offense, and Chloe Riassetto finished the final inning of the game, allowing just one hit in four batters faced.
UP NEXT: No. 2 Tech will face UC Riverside tomorrow morning to close out the tournament.
