
UCLA awaits Lady Raiders in NCAA Tournament First Round

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 38 Texas Tech Lady Raiders (14-10, 4-5 Big 12) travel to Durham, N.C., to begin their quest for the NCAA Championship in the Duke Regional hosted at Ambler Tennis Stadium on May 5-6. They start off against the No. 20-ranked and two-seeded UCLA Bruins (13-7, 6-4 Pac-12) on Friday, May 5 at 1 p.m. If the Lady Raiders win, they will face the winner of the match between No. 7-ranked Duke and William & Mary in the second round on Saturday.
This is Texas Tech's 11th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, making 11-straight tournament appearances dating back to 2012. In addition, Texas Tech has made the second round of the tournament for two-consecutive seasons.
Heading into the regional as the three seed, the Lady Raiders are coming off a tough loss against No. 18 Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Tournament. The Lady Raiders dropped the doubles point, but Olivia Peet got things going in singles when she defeated Kristina Novak on court one in straight sets.
Metka Komac captured the Lady Raiders' second point of the day and her fifth win on court five with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory against Sofia Rojas. Avelina Sayfetdinova also recorded her fifth ranked win of the season with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 112 Alana Wolfberg at court two to make it 3-3.
In dual singles matches, four Lady Raiders have recorded 10-plus victories on the season. Yekaterina Dmitrichenko leads the team with 13 wins followed by Sayfetdinova who has captured 12 wins and a team-high five ranked wins. Komac and Cristina Tiglea round out the Lady Raiders with 11 and 10 wins, respectively. When looking at doubles, the No. 39 duo of Komac and Sayfetdinova have recorded a team-best 12 dual wins as a pair, five of those against ranked opponents, while winning eight of their last 10 doubles matches.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The ITA No. 20-ranked UCLA Bruins come into the matchup as the two seed of the regional with a 13-7 overall record, while going 6-4 in the Pac-12 conference. They are 7-3 in their last 10 matches and recently came off a loss in the Pac-12 Tournament against the No. 23 Washington Huskies. The Bruins have two players ranked in singles with Fangran Tian checking in at No. 14 and Kimmi Hance ranked at No. 115. The Bruins also have a team ranked in doubles as Elise Wagle and Hance are No. 4 in the nation.
