Desirae Spearman shines in return home; Red Raiders eclipse 100 home runs
Kaitlyn Terry and NiJaree Canady both picked up their 18th wins of the season. Terry finished her day in the circle with 3.0 perfect innings and seven strikeouts against the nine batters she faced. Canady threw 5.0 innings with 10 strikeouts and allowed just two base runners. Samantha Lincoln got the other two innings of work, striking out three batters and allowing just the one unearned run. In all, the Red Raider pitching staff allowed just three base runners.
Along with Spearman, Jackie Lis and Mia Williams had big days at the plate. Lis went 5-for-7 with six RBI, including a three-run homer, a double and a triple in game missing out on the cycle but just one hit. Williams went 4-for-6 at the plate with a homer and six RBI, four of which came in the first inning of game two, as she tied the program record for sacrifice flies in a season (6) and moved up to second in program history for homers in a season (17) only behind All-American Jessica Hartwell's 20 in 2018
Mihyia Davis went 3-for-6 at the plate and stole three bases putting her at 33 on the season, just three off the single-season record. Terry also went 3-for-6 and added a homer as she has now reached base safely in 36 straight games. Jasmyn Burns and Hailey Toney each notched home runs. Lauren Allred picked up an RBI and Nikolette Schmidt saw her first collegiate action as both a pinch runner and a catcher as scored a run and recorded three putouts.
How it Happened:
Game One:
The Red Raiders got their feet wet in the first inning of game one as Williams scored Davis on a sacrifice fly to give Tech a 1-0 lead. Terry kept the momentum in the Red Raiders dugout as she struck out the side on 11 pitches.
Tech broke the dam open in the second inning after Spearman got thing started with a walk. Davis and Terry hit back-to-back singles to make it a 3-0 game and with two runners on Lis was set up for an RBI opportunity smashing a three-run homer to right center field. Taylor Pannell got a single and Burns walked to set up another three-run homer but this time off the bat of El Paso native Spearman to make it a 9-0 game.
Canady would pitch the second inning and go three-up, three-down with a strikeout. Tech added two more runs in the third thanks to a big fly by Terry to dead center marking the 100th home run of the season for the Red Raiders. The next two innings in the circle the Miners would get their lone hit of the game but nothing would come of it.
After being held scoreless in the fourth, Tech added five more runs in the fifth thanks to a two-run double by Lis, a two-run homer by Burns and a solo shot from Spearman.
Game 2:
Tech carried that momentum over to game two as they jumped on the Miners early with a nine-run first inning thanks to back-to-back bunt singles to lead off the game which set up Williams for her 17th homer of the season, which is tied for second most in program history. Burns doubled a few at-bats later to score Lis and Allred hit a ground ball to score Spearman to make it a 5-0 ball game. Canady hit a deep sac fly and on a wonky play, Davis drew a walk and then stole second base while Pannell darted home to score. Back-to-back singles from Williams and Lis made it a 9-0 game before the first UTEP batter had even taken a swing.
Neither team scored again until a fourth inning home run off the bat of Toney in a 3-2 count. Toney skied the ball over the right field fence to make it a 10-0 game. UTEP got its lone run of the day on a sac fly but Tech got the run right back with a sac fly of their own off the bat of Williams.
UP NEXT: No. 2/5 Red Raiders will head to Tempe to take on No. 24/RV Arizona State in a three-game series starting on Friday.
