Pannell, Spearman hit homers as Terry tosses complete game gem
TEMPE, Arizona – Kaitlyn Terry was brilliant in the No. 2/5 Red Raiders (45-4, 17-2) 6-0 win over No. 24/RV Arizona State on Friday night. Terry threw a complete game with seven strikeouts and allowed just two hits as she improved to 19-1 on the season. Tech scored all six of its runs with two outs tonight, rallying to get timely hits.
Taylor Pannell and Desirae Spearman both launched two-run homers off the Sun Devils (35-14, 8-11) ace Kenzie Brown while Mia Williams and Jackie Lis notched RBI in the seventh inning to add insurance runs and secure the game one win.
Hailey Toney was 1-for-1 with a sac fly and a walk while also scoring a run, stealing a base and playing a strong shortstop taking care of all five chances hit her way. Logan Halleman also recorded a hit and a stolen base while Lauren Allred took one for the team on a hit by pitch which allowed Pannell to come up to back and hit her homer.
How it Happened:
The game was scripted to be a low-scoring pitchers duel from the start with two of the top pitchers in the country in Terry and Brown. The game followed that script for the first three innings as there was only one hit off the bat of Lis for a double.
Tech broke the scoreless game in the fourth after Allred took a pitch on the arm to get her on first base with two outs. Pannell took the very next she saw deep over the wall in left center field to make it a 2-0 game. The Sun Devils looked to respond as they got their first hit of the night on a double down the line, but Terry got the next batter she faced to swing through three straight pitches to get out of the inning.
In the top of the sixth Pannell got another two-out rally going as she doubled to right field. The next pitch Spearman took it deep to center field for her 12th home run of the season and to put Tech up 4-0. Arizona State got its only other hit to lead off the bottom of the sixth, but it wouldn't amount to anything else.
Again with two outs, Tech rattled off two more runs with back-to-back hits from Williams and Lis to make it a 6-0 game as the Red Raiders picked up their 15th shutout victory of the season.
UP NEXT: No. 2/5 Red Raiders will take on No. 24/RV Arizona State in game two of the series at 4 p.m. CT tomorrow on ESPN2.
