Red Raiders put up 12 runs; Canady, Lincoln combine for shutout
STEPHENVILLE, Texas – No. 3 Tech took down Tarleton (21-14) 12-0 on Tuesday night in Stephenville behind a combined shutout performance from NiJaree Canady and Samantha Lincoln and a big day from Jackie Lis at the plate.
The Red Raiders (31-2, 8-1) had three long balls off the bats of Mia Williams, Jackie Lis and Jasmyn Burns. Lis ended the day 3-for-4 with a home run and a pair of doubles while adding three RBI. Williams also went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs and added two stolen bases while Burns went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Canady went 5.0 innings, striking out nine batters and allowing just one hit. Lincoln came in and also gave up just one hit as she sat down six of the seven batters she faced. Canady now sits at 982 career strikeouts, second most among active players behind Belmont's Maya Johnson who eclipsed 1,000 early today.
Freshman Allyson Dobbs got her first career at-bat and made it a memorable one as she hit a two-RBI single up the middle in the top of the seventh inning to give Tech its final two runs. Taylor Pannell went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs while Mihyia Davis went 2-for-5. Kaitlyn Terry improved her hitting streak to 20 games and now has the second-longest hitting streak in program history behind Elysasa Sigala who had a 21 game hit streak in 2004.
How it Happened:
The Red Raiders jumped on the Texans early thanks to a two-run homer off the bat of Williams after Terry got a hit to the left side. Davis added another run for Tech in the second inning after a double scored Pannell who reached on a double off the wall to lead off the inning.
Canady tossed another 1-2-3 inning which led to another Red Raider homer off the bat of Lis who scorched one over the center field wall to score Williams who reached on a bunt single. Canady impressed again an inning later as she struck out the side.
Burns and Lis gave Tech two more runs on a single and double, respectively, to make it 7-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Canady took a perfect game into the frame and after getting one out walked a batter, got another out and then allowed a hit. She responded as she does best with a strike out to slam the door on any momentum gained by the Titans.
Tech didn't put up any runs in the sixth but did add five in the seventh started by a Burns solo homer. Hailey Toney then pushed across two runs with a bases-loaded single. Dobbs then started her career with a two-RBI single to cap off the scoring. Lincoln followed Canady's lead with two shutout innings as Tech picked up its 31st win of the season.
UP NEXT: Tech will host Iowa State in a three-game series beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday.
