
Peet records ranked victory as Tech falls to No. 12 ISU

AMES, Iowa – The No. 35 Texas Tech Lady Raiders challenged the No. 12 Iowa State Cyclones with five three-set singles matches and a ranked win, but the Cyclones defeated Tech, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon.
Iowa State (16-4, 6-2 Big 12) was able to take a 1-0 lead after winning two doubles matches against the Lady Raiders (14-9, 4-5 Big 12).
At court three, Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Camryn Stepp were taking on Sofia Cabezas and Miska Kadleckova. The Lady Raiders went down early, 1-4, before rallying back and cutting into the lead at 4-5. However, the Cyclone duo held on to win the match, 6-4.
Iowa State clinched the doubles point at court two as No. 57 Ange Oby Kajuru and Xinyi Nong took down Olivia Peet and Cristina Tiglea. The match started out back and forth as the pairs tied it up at 3-3. Iowa State's duo then pulled away by winning three-straight games to take it, 6-3.
At the top court, No. 36 Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova faced No. 52 Thasaporn Naklo and Anna Supapitch Kuearum. The Cyclones took a 5-2 lead before the Lady Raiders won three-consecutive games to make it 4-5 when the match went unfinished.
In singles, the Cyclones were able to win three more matches to clinch it, but not before Texas Tech made them earn every point. At court six, Chie Kezuka would take the win over freshman Arina Oreshchenkova, 6-4, 6-1, to lead 2-0.
Iowa State's next point came at court two as No. 122 Avelina Sayfetdinova dropped a hard-fought match to No. 74 Kajuru. The Lady Raider dominated in set one, as she won it 6-2. Kajuru evened the score when she took the second set by a 6-0 score. The Cyclone led Sayfetdinova in the final set, 5-3, before Sayfetdinova rallied back to win another game. But it was too late as Kajuru claimed the match, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Texas Tech got a crucial point at the top of the lineup as Peet posted her third ranked singles win of the season against No. 56 Naklo. Naklo won set one by a 6-3 score before Peet gained control of the next set, only dropping one game to win it 6-1. The third set saw both players trading blows until it went into a tiebreaker. That was when Peet took over to win her match, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
Iowa State had a 3-1 advantage when the Cyclones clinched the contest at court five. Komac was facing Cabezas as she took the lead with a 6-2 first set. The Cyclone evened the match after posting a 6-3 win in set two. Komac held a 3-2 advantage in the third set before Cabezas won two-straight games to make it 4-3. From there, Cabezas would close it out for Iowa State and win by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
When the match was clinched, Tiglea was rolling at court three. After going down 5-7 in the first set, she fought back to easily win the next set, 6-2. Tiglea was up on Kadleckova, 4-0, in the third when play concluded. Over at court four, Dmitrichenko and Kuearum battled it out in another third setter as the Cyclone won set one, 7-5, before the Lady Raider picked up a 6-4 second set win. Kuearum led 4-2 in the final set when Iowa State won.
The Lady Raiders will head to Lawrence, Kan., for the Big 12 Tournament starting on Thursday, April 20. The bracket will be revealed as soon as the regular season concludes.
