
Tech blows past No. 20 Kansas

LUBBOCK, Texas – After picking up a ranked doubles win and five singles victories, the No. 43 Texas Tech Lady Raiders dominated the No. 20 Kansas Jayhawks with a 6-1 victory at the McLeod Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Raiders (11-6, 1-2 Big 12) started off the windy afternoon by capturing the doubles point against the Jayhawks (11-4, 2-3 Big 12) in 2-0 fashion.
No. 50 duo Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova won their second-consecutive and third-overall ranked doubles win at court one over No. 61 Malkia Ngounoue and Heike Janse Van Vuuren, 6-4.
At court three, Texas Tech clinched the doubles point with Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Camryn Stepp's 6-4 win over Carmen Roxana Manu and Jocelyn Massey. When the point was secured, the Lady Raiders' tandem of Olivia Peet and Cristina Tiglea were up 5-4 at court two over Tamari Gagoshidze and Maria Titova.
Dmitrichenko then added to Tech's advantage by capturing the Lady Raider's second point against Kansas at court four against Van Vuuren, 6-3, 6-3.
Not long after, the Jayhawks scored their first point of the contest with Peet losing at court one to No. 56 Ngounoue 3-6, 1-6.
Texas Tech's third point of the match came from court five when Komac posted a victory over Kansas' Gagoshidze, 6-2, 6-3.
Down 30-0 in the third and final set, freshman Arina Oreshchenkova overcame the deficit by winning four-straight points to clinch her first match of the season and collect her first Big 12 singles win on the year against Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez at court six, 6-3, 0-6, 6-1.
After the clinching point was scored, Texas Tech's Sayfetdinova added to the lead at court two with a win over Titova, 7-6 (3), 6-3.
To finish off the day, Tiglea added the final point to the Lady Raiders' dominant win over Kansas by beating Manu at court three, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (7).
With the win, the Lady Raiders have won their first Big 12 contest and have their third ranked win of the year, with this being the first over a top-20 program. Texas Tech has also recorded their 11th doubles point of the season and are 10-1 when winning the doubles point.
Up next, Texas Tech is back home on Sunday, March 26 at 10 a.m. against Kansas State for another Big 12 conference match.
