March 26, 2023 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – After recording five singles wins on the day, the No. 43 Texas Tech Lady Raiders earned their second Big 12 victory of the season when they overtook the Kansas State Wildcats, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (12-6, 2-2 Big 12) won its 12th doubles point of the season after picking up wins at courts two and three over Kansas State (2-16, 0-6 Big 12). With the Wildcats forfeiting at court three, the Lady Raiders only needed one more win to claim the point.
That victory would come at court two as the tandem of Olivia Peet and Cristina Tiglea would clinch doubles for Tech with a 6-4 win against Florentine Dekkers and Farhat Quamar. When the point was won, No. 50 Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova were tied with Vanesa Suarez and Manami Ukita at court one, 5-5.
The Lady Raiders added one more quick point at the beginning of singles as K-State forfeited at court six. With a 2-0 lead, Komac posted another fast win at court four when she defeated Quamar, 6-1, 6-1.
Kansas State got one back when Rozalia Gruszczynska beat freshman Arina Oreshchenkova at court five, 6-3, 6-3.
Clinching the match for Tech was freshman Yekaterina Dmitrichenko at court three. The Lady Raider would collect her fourth match clinch this year when she overtook Ukita in two, 6-3, 6-4.
Tiglea picked up another win for Tech, this time at court two, when she posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Suarez to make it 5-1.
Peet was taking on Dekkers at the top court for the final match of the day. Going down 6-4 in the first set, the fifth-year senior showed her poise as she would win four-straight games in the second set to claim it, 7-5, and force a third-set super tiebreaker. In the breaker, Peet dominated as she would claim Tech's sixth point of the match, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (4).
Up next, Texas Tech continues Big 12 play with two home matches next week against Baylor on Friday, March 31 and versus Texas on Sunday, April 2 at the McLeod Tennis Center.
