Lady Raiders fall to No. 22 OU in conference opener

NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 33 Texas Tech Lady Raiders dropped their Big 12 opener to the No. 22 Oklahoma Sooners, 6-1, on Friday evening at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The Sooners (12-6, 2-1 Big 12) got off to a hot start when they picked up two doubles wins to claim the first point against Tech (10-5, 0-1 Big 12). The OU duo of Carmen and Ivana Corley, who are ranked No. 32, defeated No. 77 Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova by a 6-1 score at court one.
Then, Dana Guzman and Julia Garcia Ruiz picked up a win over Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Camryn Stepp, 6-4, at court three to clinch the point. When play was finished, Olivia Peet and Cristina Tiglea were locked in a battle with the No. 8 team in the country of Alexandra Pisareva and Layne Sleeth at court two, 4-4.
The Sooners kept the momentum heading into singles as they tallied five more wins. Garcia Ruiz claimed a victory over freshman Arina Oreshchenkova at court six, 6-2, 6-2, before Sleeth defeated Peet at court one, 6-1, 6-2.
No. 86 Guzman would clinch the match for the Sooners with a victory against No. 117 Sayfetdinova at court two, 6-0, 6-4. Tiglea gave No. 97 Carmen Corley trouble at court three, but would fall by a 7-6 (6), 6-1 score. At court four, Dmitrichenko fought with Pisareva, but ended up dropping her match, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
Komac was the lone Lady Raider to record a singles win on the day after she collected a gritty win at court five against Emma Staker. Dropping the first set, 6-1, Komac rallied back to win her next set by the same score. Ultimately, the Lady Raider would prevail when she won the third set, 6-4, for the comeback win.
The Lady Raiders continue Big 12 play with a match against Oklahoma State on Sunday, March 19 in Stillwater.
