Texas Tech improved to 14-5, 4-1 in Big 12
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The No. 25 Lady Raider Tennis squad jumped back into the win column with a 4-3 win over No. 48 Kansas State on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Texas Tech improved to 14-5 on the season, 4-1 in Big 12 play. The win marked the Lady Raiders' third ranked win of the season.
Â
"We had a tough one today. Credit goes to Kansas State for making it that way," Head Coach Todd Petty said. "We were very flat at the beginning, but finished with much more of a sense of urgency."
Â
"What is really fun to see is the development of freshmen like Kennedy and Nell. They are really buying in and figuring it out. That doesn't always result in wins, but will pay off for the future of Lady Raider Tennis."
Â
The Wildcats (10-9, 0-6) kicked off the match with a 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.
Â
The Lady Raiders opened singles play winning five out of the six first sets against the Wildcats.
Â
Senior Felicity Maltby was the first player off in singles play. She quickly took a dominate 6-1, 6-2 victory over K-State's Maria Linares on court one. With the win, Maltby improved to 4-1 in Big 12 play and earned her 13th win at the No. 1 position.
Â
K-State regained the lead, 2-1, after Olivia Peet dropped a two-set match (5-7, 0-6) on court five.
Â
Freshman Nell Miller captured her second conference win of the season as she defeated Margot Decker (7-5, 7-4) in straight sets on court two.
Â
Senior Lana Rush pushed the Lady Raiders ahead 3-2 with her 7-6(4), 6-1 victory on court six. With the win, Rush improved to 9-2 when playing at the no. 6 position this season.
Â
Freshman Kennedy Bridgforth dropped her first Big 12 match of the season as she fell to Anna Turco in three sets (6-2, 1-6, 5-7).
Â
Freshman Denise-Antonela Stoica was the last one on the court and had a one-set lead over K-State's Karine-Marion Job. Stoica trailed 3-5 in the second set before winning three of the four last games. She went on to crush Job, 7-0, in the tiebreaker to clinch the match for the Lady Raiders.
