Tech improves to 10-4 before beginning Big 12 play next week
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 30 Texas Tech Women's Tennis team picked up its 10th win of the season as the Lady Raiders defeated No. 38 Rice, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Raiders improved to 10-4 on the season and earned their second ranked win of the season.

The Lady Raiders won the doubles point after winning on courts one and two. Doubles duo Felicity Maltby and Nell Miller sealed the doubles point by defeating Rice's No. 53-ranked doubles pair on court two. The competition was evenly matched through the first few games until Tech pulled away to win by 6-3.Â

In singles play, the two teams split the first-set victories. Rice's Anastasia Smirnova tied the match at 1-1 after defeating Kennedy Bridgforth in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) on court three.

Senior Lana Rush secured the first singles point for Tech with a convincing first set victory, 6-0, and finishing with a 6-4 win in set two.Â

Almost simultaneously, No. 47 Maltby closed out her match on court one with a straight-set victory (6-1, 6-4) over Rice's No. 86 Michaela Haet.Â

Tech had a 3-1 lead until freshman Nell Miller dropped a tough second-set to Victoria Smirnova (6-0, 7-6(5)) in her first match on court two.

Olivia Peet finished things off with a three-set clinching match win on court five. Peet opened the match with a 6-4 win in set one, before Priya Niezgoda tied the match with a 6-3 set two. With her teammates cheering her own, Peet clinched the match with a 6-3 win in the deciding third set.

UP NEXT
The Lady Raiders will host West Virginia and Iowa State this weekend in the Big 12 season opener. Texas Tech is set to face West Virginia on Friday at 5 p.m. and Iowa State on Sunday at noon.
