Lady Raiders Begin Big 12 Play with a Win

Texas Tech defeats West Virginia, 6-1
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 25 Lady Raider Tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over West Virginia in the Big 12 season opener on Friday evening.

Texas Tech improved to 11-4 on the season and 1-0 in Big 12 play. The Lady Raiders have won seven of the last eight Big 12 openers.

The Lady Raiders opened the match with two wins in doubles play. Doubles pair Felicity Maltby and Nell Miller captured a 6-2 win on court two just before Lana Rush and Kennedy Bridgforth clinched the point with a 6-1 victory on court one. Maltby and Miller improved to 5-1 when playing at the No. 2 position.

In singles action, the Lady Raiders earned first set wins in all but one match and finished out with two-set wins on five of the six courts.

No. 47 Maltby gave the Lady Raiders a 2-0 lead with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory on court one. She improved to 10-4 in dual matches for the season.

Miller has found her groove on court three as she captured a 6-2, 6-2 win, improving to 3-1 at the No. 3 position.

Bridgforth clinched the fourth point of the match as she defeated Anastasia Bovolskaia in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) on court four.

After a slow start, senior Francesca Sella captured her first Big 12 win with a 6-4, 6-1 victory on court two. She improved to 3-2 at the No. 2 position.

Freshman Olivia Peet earned the sixth point of the match after winning 6-4, 6-3 on court five. Peet is a perfect 6-0 during dual matches.
