No. 11-seeded Texas Tech is back in the WCWS and set to face Mississippi State
OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 11 Texas Tech is back in the Women's College World Series for the second straight season and set to face Mississippi State on Thursday at 11 a.m. on ESPN in what will be the first game of the weekend.
The Red Raiders come into Oklahoma City after defeating No. 6 Florida in the Gainesville with a 16-5 run-rule victory on Sunday. Last season, Tech advanced all the way to the championship series last season but before that faced Mississippi State in the Lubbock Regional taking both games against them.
Mississippi State comes in as the only unseeded team in the field after knocking off Oklahoma to advance to its first-ever WCWS. The Bulldogs went 1-2 against Tech last season, winning in a regular season game in Clearwater. The series between the teams is an even 3-3.
Quick Hits:
As a team, the Red Raiders have more than 100 NCAA Tournament games, 300 at-bats and 180 innings pitched. Canady has 163.0 postseason innings pitched and has an ERA of 1.63. Davis leads on offense with a .452 batting average thanks to 38 hits. The postseason experienced group will look to make a run.
Lauren Allred and Jackie Lis have been two of Tech's hottest hitters down the stretch. Allred is batting .500 so far this postseason and was the hero in Tech's historic comeback against Ole Miss. Lis is slugging .850 with a team-high 12 RBI as she makes her first appearance at the WCWS in her historic four-year career.
Lauren Allred has reached legendary status in Lubbock, Texas. Allred hit the sac fly against OU last year to push Tech to the championship series and after her game-tying grand slam against Ole Miss she has etched her name in Lubbock lore.
The Red Raiders have broken almost every offensive record in the book including batting average, home runs, RBI, doubles, stolen bases, slugging percentage and walks. Tech's pitching staff has also thrown five no-hitters this year, a school record, thanks to one of the best one-two pitching combos in the country.
The Red Raiders are already up to 38 run-rule victories this season. The program record was 20 and they had 14 all of last season. A new program record for shutouts in a season was set last year as Tech had 26 shutout victories. They have 19 this season.
Mia Williams currently leads the team in doubles (22), RBI (77) and homers (24) and she has 177 total bases on the season. Williams is having a career year a set new program records in runs, RBI and home runs while tying the record for doubles and sac flies. Williams is also the first Red Raider to ever record 20 stolen bases and 20 home runs in the same season.
