Tech defeats UTSA 10-0 in five innings in fifth game in as many days
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 2/3 Red Raiders took care of business on Tuesday evening, defeating UTSA (20-26) 10-0 in five innings. The Red Raiders now have 29 run-rule victories and 13 shutouts on the season.
Tech (42-3, 16-2) used 15 hits to score 10 runs including two home runs and one double. Tech peppered the Roadrunners defense with singles and drew six walks on the night. Six Red Raiders had multiple hits including Kaitlyn Terry, Lauren Allred, Mihyia Davis, Jackie Lis, Taylor Pannell and Jasmyn Burns.
Burns finished 2-for-3 with RBI including her 11th homer on the season. Davis, who batted in the three hole for the first time this season, hit her ninth homer of the year and finished with two RBI. Williams got the only other extra-base hit for Tech, lining a double down the left field line to score two runs.
Terry improved to 17-1 on the season and struck out eight UTSA batters while allowing just one hit. Terry needed just 77 pitches to complete the 13th shutout of the season as no UTSA player reached second base.
How it Happened:
Tech took an early lead after lead off singles by Terry and Allred set up Williams for a two-RBI double. Burns hit a single through the left side to score Terry from third to make it 3-0. Terry got three ground ball outs in the first inning to set the tone early.
Allred singled and stole second and Davis brought herself and Allred home with a two-run home run to center field. Pannell singled to add another run to make it 6-0. Terry allowed the first baserunner of the night on a walk but quickly made up for it with a strikeout.
Tech had three hits in the third inning but were held scoreless for the only time all night. Terry struck out two of the four batters she faced to keep Tech's lead at 6-0. Lis led off the fourth inning with a single, and Burns brought her home with a home run to right field to put the game in run-rule territory.
UTSA got its lone hit of the day in the second at bat of fourth but Terry struck out the other three batters she faced. Pannell added another run on an RBI single and then Burns got the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly. Terry used two more strikeouts to finish the shutout and get another win on the road.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will complete its tour tomorrow at 6 p.m. against Texas State in San Marcos.
