Tech puts up nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings to give the Red Raiders another series win
ORLANDO, Florida – The No. 3 Red Raiders put up five runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth inning to give them a 9-0 win and secure the top 25 series win over No. 24/25 UCF (24-9, 3-5) on Saturday night.
Kaitlyn Terry improved to 12-0 in the circle after tossing a complete-game shutout in which she gave up just four hits while striking out five batters. Tech (29-2, 7-1) used six hits and a pair of UCF errors to score its nine runs.
Mihyia Davis bounced back with a 2-for-3 day at the plate and added a walk while scoring a run to lead the offense. Terry led the team with three RBI as Mia Williams, Desirae Spearman, Lauren Allred and Jasmyn Burns each picked up an RBI. Lagi Quiroga reached base twice on a pair of walks and also came across to score.
How it Happened:
Neither offense was able to get going early. Tech got a pair of base runners in each of the first two innings and got its first hit in the third inning off the bat of Davis.
The Knights looked to have the momentum after they struck out two Red Raiders in the top of the fourth inning and got two runners on with no outs. UCF moved the runners into scoring position on a sac bunt, but the Terry locked in and delivered back-to-back strikeouts to leave the runners stranded and put the momentum in Tech's dugout.
Quiroga got things started offensively, working a lead-off walk. Logan Halleman pinch ran for catcher and moved to second on a passed ball. Mikayla Garcia pinch hit and reached on an error after the first baseman missed the tag on her. With runners on the corners, Allred reached on a fielder's choice and Halleman scored after a beautiful slide at home avoided the tag.
The Red Raiders continued to pass the bat as Terry drove in two runs on a single up the middle and then came around to score on a double from Williams. Burns then traded places with Williams to give Tech a 5-0 lead going into the sixth inning.
Quiroga got the inning started again with a walk and came around to score from first after a double off the bat of Spearman. A walk by Allred and a single by Davis loaded the bases for Terry who hit a sac fly to make it 7-0. With two outs, Burns put the ball in play and an error by the Knights infield scored two more runs to put the game in run-rule territory.
The Knights got a two-out single, but nothing came of it as Terry quickly got the third out thanks to Hailey Toney's glove as the Red Raiders picked up their 29th win of the season.
UP NEXT: Tech will finish its series tomorrow against No. 24/25 UCF at 11 a.m. CT.
