Seeking their second-straight sweep, the Red Raiders settled for the series victory
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Baseball saw its three-game winning streak snapped in an 18-7, eight inning setback to Kansas Sunday afternoon at a blustery Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
In defeat, Texas Tech (13-6, 2-1 Big 12) was limited to just six hits on the afternoon, the lowest since Tech had just five total hits against No. 7 Arkansas in the 6-5 extra inning loss back on Feb. 15.
The Red Raiders also struck out a season-high 13 times.
Up 2-0 after Jackson Burns tossed a 1-2-3 first inning and the offense scored runs on a throwing error from Kansas (11-8, 1-2 Big 12) catcher Augusto Mungarrieta and a wind dropped popup to left that turned into a fielder's choice, the Red Raiders saw KU respond using an RBI ground out and back-to-back home runs from Josh Dykhoff and Dariel Osoria to take a 3-2 lead. The home run for Osoria was one of three he would hit on the afternoon.
The game remained 3-2 KU, until the third inning when Connor Shouse doubled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a wild pitch.
After KU struck for three runs on a two-run home run from Osoria and an RBI double from Dylan Schlotterback, Tech pulled to within 6-5 on a two-run home run by Robin Villeneuve.
With two outs and a runner on first, KU got a third-straight home run from Osoria to take an 8-5 lead to the bottom of the fifth.
In the home half of the fifth, Tech got a pair of doubles from Shouse and Freshman Linkin Garcia to cut the KU lead to 8-6, but KU used three runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and five in the eighth to close out the run-rule win.
In the setback, Tech left fielder Logan Hughes took a rare 0-for-4 as the outfielder saw his 18-game on-base streak to open the season snapped.
Despite the loss, the Red Raiders did close the 15 games homestand at 12-3.
