The Red Raiders fell despite leading 6-0 and 7-2
DALLAS – Despite racing out to leads of 6-0 and 7-2, Texas Tech Baseball fell 16-10 Tuesday night to Dallas Baptist at Horner Ballpark.
The loss snaps a four-game Texas Tech (13-7) winning streak in the overall series and marks the first time Tech loss to DBU (12-9) since 2018.
Staked to an early 3-0 lead after a bases clearing single from Caden Ferraro, Freshman Adam Hayes backed up the first inning crooked number with a scoreless first inning.
The zero in the first was the only scoreless frame the Red Raiders would toss on the night, as all seven Red Raider arms allowed a least one run.
In fact, of 13 pitchers that threw for either side on Tuesday, only DBUs final reliver, Avery Duncan did not allow at least one run.
Up 3-0, the Red Raiders used the longball in the second to hang another three-spot, when a 114 MPH, 454-foot Robin Villeneuve two-run shot chased DBU (12-9) starter Athan Kroll from the ballgame.
The Red Raiders made it 6-0 with two outs on a 113 MPH, 480-feet blast from Connor Shouse. The homer for the Georgia Tech transfer was the longest home run of the season by a Red
Raider and was one of two solo shots he'd hit on the night. Shouse drove in four, becoming the fourth Red Raider this season to homer twice in a game.
After DBU struck for an unearned run in their turn at-bat in the second, the Patriots got their lone 1-2-3 inning of the night when southpaw Liam Watt retired the Red Raider side in order.
Watt tossed three strong innings for DBU and allowed just four hits and two runs to earn the victory.
With the bases empty with one out, the Red Raider freshman, Hayes, allowed his first and only earned run of the night on a solo home run by DBUs Ben Tryon. The blast cut the Red Raider lead to 6-2.
The pitch would be the final of the night for Hayes, as the Red Raiders turned to redshirt freshman Logan Addison.
Addison quickly retired the first two batters he faced on a flyout and a strikeout to sned the game to the fourth.
After Watt retired the first two batters he faced, Tech used three-straight two out singles from centerfielder Kyeler Thompson, Tracer Lopez and Shouse to take the 7-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Tech used a strikeout to retire the lead-off batter before an infield hit, a hit-by-pitch and a walk loaded the bases with one out.
With nowhere to put the next DBU hitter, Addison won a 3-2 battle on a strikeout to put the second out of the inning on the board with the Red Raiders up 7-2.
After losing DBUs left fielder Jake Bennett to a full-count hit-by-pitch, the Red Raiders turned to Heeryun Han with the bases loaded in a 7-3 game.
Han, who struggled with his command on Tuesday, walked the next two batters to allow DBU to pull to within 7-5.
The walks combined with three-straight singles allowed the Patriots to take the lead for the first and final time on the night at 9-7. DBU in the seven-run frame saw seven-straight batters reach and 10-of-11 reach in the crucial inning.
Trailing for the first time all night, Tech pulled to within 9-8 on an RBI single from Matt Quintanar that scored Linkin Garcia from second. Garcia who went 0-2 with two walks, saw his team-best 17 game hitting streak snapped on Tuesday night.
The two-walks did extend Garcia's on-base streak to 18-straight, which ties for the longest streak this season by a Red Raider.
With Quintanar on first, the next Tech hitter, Jesse Rusinek walked to place tying run (Quintanar) in scoring position and the go-ahead run on base with one out. Rusinek walked three times and was plunked by a pitch in five trips to the plate.
DBU turned to righty Armani Knipper who struck out Villeneuve before ending the frame on a put out on third on a fielder's choice from Thompson.
To within a run at 9-8, the Red Raiders allowed a two-out single to Luke Pettitte that scored Bennett to put DBU back on top by a pair at 10-8. Pettitte is the youngest son of former Yankees and Astros lefty Andy Pettitte.
After a six-inning two-out solo home run from outfielder Logan Hughes pulled Tech to 10-9, DBU scored a run in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth to take a 16-10 lead into the ninth.
The lone run for the Red Raiders amongst the seventh and eighth innings was another Shouse solo home run.
Down by six heading to the ninth, the Red Raiders placed the first two runners on with nobody out before DBUs Duncan struck out the side to secure the win. The final Duncan strikeout came with the bases loaded and a full-count to Shouse.
With the setback, the Red Raiders fell to 9-1 this season when scoring multiple crooked numbers and to 12-1 when scoring 10 runs in a contest.
Tech is now just 1-5 when allowing double-digit runs in a game.
The Red Raider arms walked eight and hit another five batters as Tech has now allowed 33 runs in the last two contests (both losses).
UP NEXT:
