Tech walks-off KU for 10-9 Saturday win
March 14, 2026 | Baseball
The Red Raiders used a walk-off single from C Matt Quinatanar to win their third straight game
Down 1-0 and 5-3 early, Texas Tech (13-5, 2-0 Big 12) continued to show its patented resolve on Saturday, as the Red Raiders scored in six of the games nine innings including in the final five innings consecutively.
After taking a two-run lead to the seventh, and one run leads to the eighth and ninth, only to see Kansas (10-8, 0-2 Big 12) answer each time to tie the game, the Red Raiders delivered the aforementioned knockout punch when Caden Ferraro doubled with one out and came around to score on his former Blinn College teammates' single through the six-hole.
The walk-off win, is Tech's second bottom of the ninth walk-off win of the season and fourth total walk-off win (including run-rule wins).
In the victory both Quintanar and Ferraro homered and drove in three runs, as every Tech starter in the first seven slots of the order recorded at least one hit.
After a two-out home run from Kansas (10-8, 0-2 Big 12) catcher Augusto Mungarrieta gave the Jayhawks a 1-0 lead, the Red Raiders placed the lead-off man on in the bottom of the first when Kyeler Thompson singled.
With Thompson standing at first after a first inning Logan Hughes single, Kansas starter Dominic Voegele stranded the runners at the corners on a grounder.
After the teams traded zeros in the second, Texas Tech starter Connor Mohan worked around a two-out error and a walk to send the game to the bottom of the third still at 1-0 Kansas.
In their half of the third, the Red Raiders struck for three runs on a pair of RBI singles from Connor Shouse and Linkin Garcia as well as a sac-fly to left from Ferraro.
As they did for a good portion of the day, Kansas would respond to the Red Raider three-spot, using a two-out solo home run from Josh Dykhoff to pull to within 3-2.
The game remained 3-2 Texas Tech until the top of the fifth, when Kansas used a 453-foot home run from All-American Brady Ballinger to tie the game at three-all.
The Jayhawks followed the Ballinger blast with a single from Mungarrieta to place the go-ahead run at first.
After Texas Tech reliever Heeryun Han turned a popped-up bunt into a 1-3 double play for the first two outs of the inning, the Jayhawks used two walks and a single to load the bases with two outs.
The Jayhawks ultimately took a 5-3 lead on an RBI single and a throwing error. Down for the first time since the third, the Red Raiders pulled to within 5-4 on a two-out single from Linkin Garcia and a double off the batters eye by Ferraro.
With his JUCO teammate on second, Quintanar, the next Red Raider batter, unloaded on the first pitch he saw for Voegele for a two-run home run to right.
The blast traveled 426-feet and was the first career D-I home run for the catcher. The home run gave the Red Raiders a 6-5 lead.
Following a 1-2-3 inning from reliever Bryce Suiter in the sixth, the Red Raiders used a lead-off walk from Robin Villeneuve and a bunt single from Thompson to place runners on first and second with no outs for Tracer Lopez. On the first pitch Lopez saw and the 87th and final pitch of the afternoon Voegele would throw, the infielder laid down a perfect bunt that sacrificed Villeneuve to third and Thompson to second with one out.
Tech's next hitter, Shouse, chased Villeneuve home on a grounder to third base. The productive out gave Tech a 7-5 lead.
In the seventh, Kansas used back-to-back one-out singles to place the tying runs on base. Summoning reliever Jonny Lowe from the bullpen, the Red Raiders did finally retire Dykhoff for the innings second out of the inning on a fly ball.
But with runners on the corners and two outs, the Jayhawks used a pair of infield singles to tie the game at seven.
After the Red Raiders took the lead back in the home half of the seventh on a solo home run from Ferraro, Kansas immediately put the tying run and go-ahead runs on base with a lead-off single followed by a double.
With the tying run 90-feet away, Lowe used a four-pitch strike out to put the first out of the inning on the board, before KU used a productive out (grounder to third) to tie the game at 8-8.
Lowe did ultimately keep the game tied one batter later, when he coaxed a grounder to first base.
Facing Kansas reliever Toby Scheidt, the Red Raiders once again took the lead on an opposite field home run from a lefty-batter this time when Lopez launched a 402-foot home run.
Down to their final three outs, the Jayhawks tied the game for the fourth time on a sac-fly from Ballinger off Tech reliever Ryan Free. Free did however limit the damage to a singular run setting the stage for the Red Raiders to walk the game off in their turn in the ninth.
With the victory, the Red Raiders improved to 12-2 at home this season, tying their 2025-win total at home. Tech also improved to 13-2 in their last 15 games and have now won or split all five series on this homestand.
UP NEXT:
The Red Raiders will look to complete the series sweep of KU tomorrow afternoon when Freshman Jackson Burns takes the hill. First pitch from Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park is set for 1 p.m.
