No. 23 Tech earns first Big 12 win of the season

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Behind dominant doubles and singles play, the No. 23 Texas Tech Lady Raiders picked up their first conference win of the year with a 4-1 victory against the Kansas Jayhawks on Friday evening at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (10-3, 1-0 Big 12) earned the doubles point to open the match against Kansas (4-6, 0-1 Big 12) with the lead. First, the No. 75-ranked tandem of Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy defeated Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina at court one. Tech took a 3-0, then held the momentum as the Lady Raiders would win it by a 6-2 score.
Clinching the point was Ella Brownback and Polina Sleptsova at court three over Meriem Ben Ezzedine and Kinley VanPelt. Both teams traded games until Tech broke Kansas' serve. The Lady Raider duo would go on to win the match, 6-4, to earn the doubles point and 1-0 lead. At court two, Mariia Hlahola and Elena Daskalova led Heike Janse Van Vuuren and Meg McCarty by a 6-5 score when their match went unfinished.
The Lady Raiders increased their lead to 3-0 after getting two-straight wins at courts three and six. Brownback dominated her match against Putilina at court six from start to finish, getting the 6-2, 6-2 victory for a 2-0 advantage. Then, Hlahola earned a straight-set win against Ben Ezzedine at court three, 6-4, 6-3, to make it 3-0 in Tech's favor.
Kansas added a point on the board with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win at court one. However, the Lady Raiders clinched the match at court two when Dmitrichenko defeated Arystanbekova in two sets. Dmitrichenko was down 1-3 in the first set before rattling off five-consecutive games to claim it, 6-3. She took a 4-2 lead in set two, but Arystanbekova responded with the next three games to go ahead, 5-4. Dmitrichenko fought back to force a tiebreak at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, she fought off a set point from Arystanbekova at 5-6 to even things at 6-all, then won three of the next four points for the 7-6 (7) second set win.
At court four, Sleptsova pushed McCarty to a third set after dropping the first, 4-6. Sleptsova would take set two with a 6-3 win, then was leading 3-2 before her match went unfinished. Over at court five, Daskalova was ahead of Nahyeong Cho, 6-1, 1-6, 5-4, before play was stopped.
Up next, the Lady Raiders head to Ames, Iowa to take on the Iowa State Cyclones this Sunday at 12 p.m. CT.
