Tech falls to Old Dominion at Ed Collins Invitational

SAN DIEGO – The Texas Tech Red Raiders fell in a hard-fought battle to the No. 66-ranked Old Dominion Monarchs, 4-3, on Friday evening at the Hogan Tennis Center to open the Ed Collins Invitational.
Old Dominion (6-5) was able to take an early lead over Texas Tech (7-4) after winning the doubles point. First, No. 77 Cosme Rolland de Ravel and Adam Majchrzak defeated Tyler Stewart and Ludovico Vaccari at court two, 6-4. Then, No. 88-ranked Connor van Schalkwyk and Codie van Schalkwyk overtook No. 80 Piotr Pawlak and Sebastian Abboud at the top court by a 6-2 score to clinch the doubles point. At court three, Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri were leading the duo of Aryan Saleh and Jean-Karin Olivier de Sardan, 5-4, when their match went unfinished.
In singles, Stewart tied the match at 1-all after taking down Codie van Schalkwyk in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, at court three. But, the Monarchs were able to get singles wins at courts two and six to take a 3-1 lead. At court four, Vaccari and Majchrzak were duking it out. In the first set, both went back-and-forth until Vaccari won it, 7-5. Then, the Red Raider claimed the match with a 6-4 second set score to cut into the deficit, 3-2.
It all came down to courts one and five as Pawlak was taking on Rolland de Ravel and Guglieri was facing Olivier de Sardan, respectively. Pawlak dropped his first set, 4-6, before evening the match with a 6-1 set two. He would take the win after a 6-2 third set score to tie it at 3-3.
Over at court five, Guglieri fell in the first set, 0-6, before winning the next one in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5). The Red Raider went down in the third set, 1-5, before getting within one game at 4-5. But, the Monarch held on to win it, 6-4, to clinch the match for Old Dominion.
Up next, the Red Raiders continue play at the Ed Collins Invitational tomorrow against UC San Diego.
