SAN DIEGO – The Texas Tech Red Raiders earned a 4-1 win against the UC San Diego Tritons on day two of the Ed Collins Invitational on Saturday evening at the Hogan Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (8-5) won the doubles point over UC San Diego (4-7) to start the match. At court three, the pairing of Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri defeated David Adamson and Robert Freedman first. The Red Raiders were down 1-2 before taking their first lead at 3-2. They maintained the advantage, winning the match, 6-3, over the UC San Diego duo.
Clinching the doubles point was No. 80 Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak at court one against Pelayo Rodriguez and Zach Pellouchoud. Abboud and Pawlak were down early, 0-2, before winning four consecutive games to take a 4-2 lead. Tech would go on to break the Triton duo's serve and win the match and doubles point with a 6-3 score.
In singles, the Red Raiders took a 3-0 lead thanks to wins at courts five and six. At five, Abboud won his match in straight sets over Adamson. After going down 0-2 on set one, Abboud would win two straight games to tie it up. He trailed against Adamson at 2-3, but then won four of the next five games for a 6-4 set. Abboud dominated the second set after winning it 6-1 to claim his match.
At court six, Felipe Pagnacco made his first dual singles appearance since January 31 and made the most of it. He took down Freedman in straight sets to give Tech a 3-0 advantage. Pagnacco cruised through set one with a 6-1 score. In the following set, Pagnacco went down 2-3 before winning three consecutive games to make it 5-3. The Tritons got a point back on the board after Carson Lee defeated Niksa Arsic at the top court, 6-3, 6-4. However, their momentum was short lived after Ludovico Vaccari clinched the match with a win at court three over Pellouchoud. The Triton took a 3-2 lead in set one before Vaccari won three games in a row. Both went back-and-forth after that to force a tiebreaker, where the Red Raider won by a 7-6 (2) score.
