No. 3 Red Raiders, No. 1 Gators set for Elite 8
March 28, 2025 | Men's Basketball
SAN FRANCISCO – From Sweet to Elite, No. 3 Texas Tech and No. 1 Florida are set for a NCAA Tournament matchup at 5:09 p.m. (CDT) on Saturday at the Chase Center in San Francisco with a trip to San Antonio at stake. The fourth game in the all-time series between the two programs will be broadcast on TBS while the Texas Tech Sports Network radio call can be heard locally on Double T 97.3 and the national radio coverage will be provided by Westwood One Sports. Â
"Any day you're still practicing and playing in March is a great day," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. "We are thrilled to be in the Elite Eight and I would be lying if we didn't say we expected to still be playing. A lot of belief on this team. Last night was a phenomenal college basketball game. Man, it's such a blessing to still be competing in the NCAA Tournament. We don't take this lightly."
The Red Raiders (28-8) stormed back from a 16-point hole in the Sweet 16 to advance with an 85-83 overtime win over No. 10 Arkansas while the Gators (33-4) cruised to an 87-71 win over No. 4 Maryland in the first game on Thursday. Tech will be playing in the program's third Elite 8, also advancing to the fourth round in 2018 and 2019, and is now one win from reaching the 2025 NCAA Final Four next week at the Alamodome. The comeback from 16 down was the second largest in Sweet 16 history, Tech's biggest this season and matched a 16-point comeback against BYU last season in McCasland's first season. Tech's largest comeback in program history was a 23-point comeback against Iowa State in 2022 and the team's 28 wins are now the third most in program history.
"I think your practice throughout the year is what prepares you for this," McCasland said. "You can't do anything in one day that's any different that's going to make that big of an impact. We will get out there and we'll move around today. We'll stretch. We had several guys that played close to 40 minutes or over. I think our ability to get rest is the most important part, and that's what we've done with our team. This adrenaline takes over when you play in these games. There's enough time in between games, it's not like conference tournament where you turn around and play in less than 24 hours. I think that's huge for us. We would prefer more rest. But with our team, there's enough grit in our locker room to be prepared for the next one. Adrenaline is sure a huge part of it."
Darrion Williams played the role of hero against the Razorbacks, hitting a 3-pointer with 9.7 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game before he scored the game-winning basket with 7.3 seconds left in overtime. Williams finished the game with 20 points and nine rebounds, while true freshman Christian Anderson scored a career-high with 22 points. Anderson made three 3-pointers in the second half, including hitting one to make it 69-66 with two minutes to play and then another to cut the Razorback lead to 72-69 with one minute remaining. JT Toppin recorded his 18th double-double of the season with 20 points, 10 rebounds and matched a career-high with five blocked shots while Federiko Federiko grabbed seven offensive rebounds and Kevin Overton added 12 points and matched a season-high with seven rebounds. Tech established a new program record in the NCAA Tournament with 51 rebounds (22 offensive) and finished the game by taking 18 more shots than the Razorbacks. A stat correction after the game pushed Toppin to 10 rebounds in the game. Anderson's 22 points are the highest ever by a Big 12 freshman in a Sweet 16 game and tied for 10th most ever by a Big 12 freshman in any NCAA Tournament game. The 22 offensive rebounds were a season-high for the team which had 17 in four games this season. Tech played without Chance McMillian for the fourth straight game. A starter in 30 games this season, McMillian averages 14.2 points per game and is 69-for-159 (43.4 percent) from 3-point range. He remains listed as day-to-day with an upper body injury.
The Gators extended a nine-game winning streak with its 87-71 win over No. 4 Maryland in the Sweet 16 after advancing to San Francisco with a 77-75 win over UConn in the Second Round and 95-69 victory over Norfolk State in the First Round. The Gators finished the game 11-for-28 from 3-point range and had 16 assists on 30 overall makes (30-for-60). Clayton leads Florida this season with 17.7 points per game and with 150 assists while Martin is averaging 14.6, Richard is at 13.5 and Alex Condon is leading the team with 7.7 rebounds in addition to scoring 10.9 points per game. Condon was limited due to injury against Maryland, finishing with six points and four rebounds in 13:32 of playing time.
Florida is third nationally by averaging 85.5 points per game and with 41.9 rebounds per game while also ranking second with 16.4 fastbreak points per game. The Gators went 14-4 in SEC play and won the SEC Championship with an 86-77 win over Tennessee on March 16 in Nashville before the NCAA Tournament. Todd Golden is in his third season as the program's head coach, leading the Gators into the Elite 8 with a 73-33 record in that time. He was the head coach for three season at San Francisco and is currently 130-69 as a head coach in his career.
Through three NCAA Tournament games, Williams leads the team with 20.3 points per game along with adding 8.0 rebounds per game after having nine against the Razorbacks. Toppin is averaging 20.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game while Anderson and Elijha Hawkins are scoring 11.3 points per game each. Hawkins led Tech with five assists in the win over Arkansas and now has 22 assists and only seven turnovers in the tournament. As a team, Tech is now averaging 81.3 points, 41.6 rebounds and 15.3 assists per game. The team has already established a new program record with 361 made 3-pointers this season – including making 13 in its First Round win over UNC Wilmington before being limited to only two in the win over Drake and going 8-for-32 against Arkansas. Toppin was 10-for-18 from the field against Arkansas and is now at 27-for-39 (69.2 percent) in the tournament.
Grant McCasland has led the Red Raiders to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first two seasons and is in the national tournament for the third time in his career as a head coach. His 51-19 record at Tech is the best start for a head coach in program history. His team has nine players who had NCAA Tournament experience before this season: Kerwin Walton (2021, 2022 – *North Carolina; 2024 – Texas Tech); Chance McMillian (2021, 2023 – *Grand Canyon; 2024 – Texas Tech); Darrion Williams (2023 – *Nevada; 2024 – Texas Tech), Jack Francis (2024 - Texas Tech), Eemeli Yalaho (2024 – Texas Tech), JT Toppin (2024 – *New Mexico), Kevin Overton (2024 – *Drake), Elijah Hawkins (2023 - *Howard), Federiko Federiko (2023 - *Pitt). The team is comprised of five returners and eight newcomers: Walton is in his third season at Texas Tech and McMillian, Williams, Francis and Yalaho are in their second. Tech went into the transfer portal for the additions of Overton (Drake), Hawkins (Minnesota), Toppin (New Mexico), Federiko (Pitt) and Corbin Green (Air Force) while Christian Anderson, Jazz Henderson and Leon Horner are in their freshman season.Â

The win over the Razorbacks takes the Red Raiders to 7-1 in the month of March going into Saturday's game.

The Gators are 2-1 all-time in the series, earning a 79-76 win on December 10, 1960, in Gainesville before taking a 71-69 overtime win on December 8, 1962, in Lubbock. In 2018, Tech advanced to the Sweet 16 with Keenan Evans scoring 22 points, Zhaire Smith providing 18 points and nine rebounds and Jarrett Culver producing 11 points and nine rebounds. HOW TEXAS TECH GOT TO SAN FRANCISCO: The Red Raiders advanced to the program's seventh trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 in program history after advancing with a 77-64 win over No. 11 Drake on Saturday in the Second Round after an 82-72 First Round victory over UNC Wilmington in Wichita, Kansas… The two games showed the team's versatility with contrasting styles, first going 13-for-46 from 3-point range against UNCW before outscoring Drake by a 50-20 margin inside the paint in a rare game with a season-low two 3-pointers. Kerwin Walton led Tech in its First Round win, scoring a career-high 27 points after going 8-for-19 on 3-pointers before not scoring against Drake. Toppin and Williams both made 11 field goals against Drake to match the program record in an NCAA Tournament game for field goals. Hawkins was one rebound shy of a triple-double against UNCW, finishing the game by recording his sixth double-double of the season with 14 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. His 10 assists matched a program record in the NCAA Tournament and gave him 21 career games with double-figure assists. Toppin, who swept through the all-America honors along with being named Big 12 Player of the Year, went for 12 points and 11 rebounds in the first-round win over UNCW and is now leading Tech with 18.1 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. The pair of games in Wichita saw Toppin surpass the 1,000-point milestone and Hawkins became the program's single-season assist leader and went over 800 career assists.
