STILLWATER, Okla. – Senior Sebastian Abboud completed a comeback singles win to propel the No. 68 Texas Tech Red Raiders over the Oklahoma State Cowboys, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (11-6, 2-1 Big 12) began the day by winning an important doubles point against Oklahoma State (7-9, 1-1 Big 12). At court one, Piotr Pawlak and Abboud recorded a ranked win against the No. 58 duo of Alessio Basile and Nicolas Kobelt. Both pairs went back-and-forth until the Red Raiders broke the Cowboys' serve, then served it out with an ace to win the match, 6-4.
Clinching the doubles point was the tandem of Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri over Ian Bracks and Thomas Gadecki at court two. Just like at court one, this was a back-and-forth affair until Tech won it 6-4 to give the Red Raiders the lead. It was also Arsic and Guglieri's first dual doubles match at court two as they move to 8-0 in doubles on the dual season.
Freshman Ludovico Vaccari gave Tech a 2-0 advantage when he beat Kobelt at court four. Vaccari won the first set by a decisive 6-2 score, before going down 1-3 in the next set. The Italy native fought back to win five consecutive games for the 6-3 victory.
Oklahoma State came back to tie the match up at 2-2 after getting wins at courts one and five. But, the Red Raiders got a much-needed point from Arsic after he took down Basile at court two in straight sets. He won in a commanding first set, 6-2. Basile then took a 3-2 lead in the second set, but Arsic responded by winning four of the next five games for the 6-4 win.
Once again, the Cowboys were able to even things up after Derek Pham won at court three over Tyler Stewart, 7-6 (1), 7-5. But that was the last win for them in the match after the clinching singles victory came at court six when Abboud completed the comeback win over Ben Stecker. Abboud dropped the first set in a close tiebreaker, 7-6 (9). He would follow this up with a dominant second set after winning it by a 6-1 score.
In the third set, Abboud broke Stecker's serve to go up 4-3, but the Cowboy answered by breaking back to tie it at 4-all. Stecker took a 5-4 lead, then was up 40-0 in the next game. However, Abboud saved four match points to make it 5-5, then broke Stecker's serve to hold the 6-5 advantage. In the final game, Abboud led 40-15 but the Cowboy fought back to make it deuce point. The Red Raider wasn't fazed, serving it out for the 7-5 win to clinch the match.
Up next, the Red Raiders host the Abilene Christian Wildcats for a midweek match on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center.
