
Dominant singles play propels Red Raiders over BYU

LUBBOCK, Texas – Behind a dominant singles outing in which the No. 69 Texas Tech Red Raiders won five first sets, the Scarlet and Black earned a 4-1 comeback win over the No. 71 BYU Cougars on Saturday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
BYU (11-4, 0-2 Big 12) came out and took two of three doubles matches against Texas Tech (10-6, 1-1 Big 12) for an early lead. At court three, the Red Raiders got a quick win after Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri defeated Alex Edmonston and Hardy Owen, 6-1. However, the Cougars came back to win at both courts one and two in order to get the doubles point.
Even though Tech was down after doubles, the Red Raiders retook the momentum in singles after winning five first sets for the fifth time this season. The Red Raiders evened the match at 1-1 when Guglieri picked up his second win of the day with a commanding victory against David Duong at court five, 6-1, 6-1.
At court two, Arsic and Zach Fuchs were battling it out. The Cougar jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first set before Arsic tied it at 2-all After going down 4-5, the Red Raider two of the next three games to force a tiebreaker, where he would go on to win by a 7-6 (4) score. In the following set, Arsic took a 3-0 lead and never looked back, winning it, 6-3, for the second overall point of the match.
Putting the third point on the board immediately after was Tyler Stewart at court three over Redd Owen. Stewart led 5-0 in the first before Owen tied it at 5-5. Stewart answered by breaking and holding serve to win, 7-5. In the next set, Stewart led 4-1 and kept the advantage, earning a 6-3 set two victory.
Clinching the match was Ludovico Vaccari at court four against Adam Chodur. Vaccari was down 0-2 and then 1-3 before going on a run, taking the first set with a 6-3 score. The next set was back-and-forth as the two players went into a tiebreaker. Vaccari was able to pull through, winning the second set by a 7-6 (4) score. This was the first match in the season where Texas Tech dropped the doubles point and won four singles matches to claim the win.
Up next, the Red Raiders host the Abilene Christian Wildcats for a midweek match on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center.
