Tech falls to Utah on Thursday

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 69-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders opened conference play with a loss to the No. 52-ranked Utah Utes, 4-1, on Thursday evening at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Utah (11-5, 2-0 Big 12) began the match by winning the doubles point against Texas Tech (9-6, 0-1 Big 12) for the early lead. At court two, Max Relic and Berk Bugarikj defeated Tyler Stewart and Ludovico Vaccari, 6-4. Clinching the point for the Utes was the No. 74-ranked duo of Reid Jarvis and Dante Teramo over No. 80-ranked Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak, 6-2.
Utah went up 3-0 after getting back-to-back singles wins. First at court two, Teramo picked up a win over Stewart by a 6-3, 6-3 score, then Bugarikj extended Utah's lead to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Pawlak at court one.
Texas Tech was able to put a point on the board after Abboud got a victory against Charles Frey at court six. In set one, Abboud took a 3-1 lead and never looked back, winning it by a 6-3 score. He would go down 3-5 in the second set before winning four-straight games for a 7-5 win.
The Utes clinched the win, however, when Emmett Potter beat Vaccari at court four, 7-6 (4), 6-2. At court two, Niksa Arsic forced a third set over Jarvis, 5-7, 6-4, before their match went unfinished. Over at court five, Thiago Guglieri was also in a third set, tied with Relic as the two held a score of 6-2, 3-6, 2-2 when it went unfinished.
Up next, the Red Raiders host the BYU Cougars on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center.
