
Red Raiders open Big 12 with two home matches

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 69-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders open Big 12 play with two home matches this week. First, Tech welcomes the No. 52 Utah Utes on Thursday at 5 p.m., before playing the No. 71 BYU Cougars on Saturday at 12 p.m. in the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders and Utes are 2-2 all-time against one another, with Texas Tech winning the last two meetings both last year and the year before. Tech holds an 8-2 all-time record over BYU, winning the last eight matches against the Cougars dating back to 1987.
Texas Tech (9-5) finished its regular season slate at the Ed Collins Invitational in San Diego last weekend, going 2-1 in the tournament with wins over San Diego State and UC San Diego. Last weekend after helping clinch two doubles points and earning a comeback win at one singles, senior Piotr Pawlak earned his first career Big 12 Player of the Week honor.
Both Pawlak and Sebastian Abboud are ranked No. 80 in doubles and lead the team with 10 dual doubles wins. In dual singles, freshman Ludovico Vaccari leads the team with nine wins, mostly coming at court four, follow by Abboud with eight wins, seven of those coming at court six.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
The No. 52-ranked Utah Utes are 10-5 on the season and 1-0 in Big 12 play. They have key wins over Old Dominion, San Diego State, Denver and Arizona State. Some losses were against Washington, South Alabama, Middle Tennessee and UC Santa Barbara. The team is led in dual singles wins by both Berk Bugarikj and Reid Jarvis with eight wins each. In dual doubles, the duo of Jarvis and Dante Carlos Teramo are ranked No. 74 and lead the way with six wins, all at court one.
The No. 71-ranked BYU Cougars ended their regular season with an 11-2 overall record and start Big 12 play against Oklahoma State on Thursday. Some key wins have come against Air Force, Cal Poly and Villanova, while BYU's two losses were against Oregon and Denver. The Cougars have a pair ranked in the latest ITA doubles rankings as Zach Fuchs and Wally Thayne check in at No. 81.
