Tech falls to Owls in Houston

HOUSTON – Despite getting a ranked doubles win, the Texas Tech Red Raiders dropped their match to the Rice Owls, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (5-4) was able to take an early lead on Rice (6-3) after claiming the doubles point. First at court three, Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri were facing Eduardo Morais and Yair Sarouk. Both teams traded games until Tech took a 3-2 lead, then won three consecutive games for the 6-2 victory.
Clinching the doubles point was Piotr Pawlak and Sebastian Abboud at court one over the No. 50-ranked duo of Arthus De La Bassetiere and Kabeer Kapasi. Tech would hold a 4-2 advantage before Rice won another game. That would be the last time they won, though, as the Red Raider tandem closed it out with a 6-3 win to clinch the point.
Rice would tie the match at 1-1 after Santiago Navarro defeated Arsic at court three, 6-1, 6-4. Abboud was able to give Tech back the lead when he took down Kapasi at court six in straight sets. After dominating the first set, 6-2, Abboud looked in control of the next set after holding a 5-2 lead. However, Kapasi fought back, eventually making it 5-4 before Abboud broke serve to claim the match with a 6-4 second set.
Tech led 2-1 in the match, but the Owls were able to win three-straight singles matches at courts one, two and five to earn a victory over the Red Raiders. When the match was finished, Ludovico Vaccari was even with Tommy Czaplinski at court four, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (2), when his match was called.
Up next, the Red Raiders are back at the McLeod Tennis Center with home matches against Nevada and Florida Gulf Coast on February 22-23.
