Vaccari’s timely comeback clinches win at UTSA
February 15, 2025 | Men's Tennis
SAN ANTONIO – After having a Friday rain delay that pushed the match to Saturday afternoon, the Texas Tech Red Raiders didn't let that thwart them from another road win as they took down the UTSA Roadrunners, 4-3, on at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (5-3) opened the match up with an early lead over the Roadrunners (3-3) thanks to doubles. At court two, Tyler Stewart and Ludovico Vaccari were taking on Oskar Grzegorzewski and Ben Chetewy Ungar. The Red Raider pair went up 3-1 on a break, but UTSA broke right back to make it 3-2. That would be the last game UTSA won as Tech took the match, 6-2.
Clinching what would be a crucial doubles point was Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri at court three against Danijal Muminovic and Enzo Vargas. Texas Tech went down 1-3 before winning four-straight games for a 5-3 advantage. UTSA held its own serve to make it 5-4, but Tech did the same and won it by a 6-4 score. At the top court, Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak were ahead of No. 53-ranked Miguel Alonso and Tiago Torres, 5-4, when their match went unfinished.
UTSA tied the match at 1-all after getting a singles win from Muminovic at court two over Stewart, 6-1, 6-4. The teams were battling it out, as four of the remaining five matches were in their third sets when the rain picked up and pushed the match to Saturday.
Once play resumed, Guglieri earned a gritty win over Vargas at court five. The Red Raider took the first set by a demanding, 6-1 score. The Roadrunner evened it up with a 7-5 second set. Down 2-3 in the third, Guglieri fought back to win four-consecutive games for a 6-3 score, giving Tech the 2-1 advantage.
At court six, Abboud added another point on the board for Tech with a straight-set victory against Santiago Flyckt. The two went back-and-forth in the first set, ultimately forcing a tiebreaker where Abboud came out victorious with the 7-6 (10) score. Then, Abboud jumped out to a 4-1 lead in set two before the Roadrunner won three of the next four games to make it 5-4. Abboud held strong, getting the next game for a 6-4 third set as the Red Raiders led UTSA 3-1.
The Roadrunners were able to grind out a couple of third-setters to tie the match at 3-3 when Grzegorzewski defeated Arsic at court three, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, then Torres beat Pawlak at the top court, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
It all came down to court four where Vaccari was trying to surmount a comeback against Ungar. After falling, 4-6, in set one, Vaccari dominated the second set with a bagel, 6-0, to tie the match up. In the third and deciding set, the Red Raider went down 2-5 and it looked as though UTSA would defend their home courts. However, the freshman wasn't rattled – fighting tooth and nail to claim the next five games in a row in order to clinch the victory for the Red Raiders with a 7-5 score. This was the second away match in a row Texas Tech fought back from a deficit to complete the 4-3 win.
Up next, the Red Raiders head to Houston, Texas for a match against the Rice Owls on Sunday, February 16 at 11 a.m.
