LUBBOCK, Texas – Junior Bailey Maupin recorded her 14th double-figure scoring game of the season, but the Texas Tech Lady Raiders fell to the No. 17 West Virginia Mountaineers, 89-53, on Wednesday night at the United Supermarkets Arena.
Maupin led the Lady Raiders (12-5, 1-3 Big 12) with 15 points and made a team-leading three 3-pointers, shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc. Graduate senior Jordyn Merritt went 3-for-6 from the field with seven points and five rebounds to close in on her 900 career points and 600 career rebounds milestones, just four points and eight rebounds shy, respectively.
Sophomore Jalynn Bristow led the way with six rebounds and two blocks, while also adding five points and an assist. Graduate senior Maya Peat and junior Jasmine Shavers collected six points apiece and Jada Wynn added another five in the loss to the Mountaineers (13-2, 3-1 Big 12).
The Mountaineers began the game scoring the first seven points to force a Texas Tech timeout. Peat would make a mid-range jumper to score first for the Lady Raiders and stop the run. Peat then scored another basket and Shavers would add four more points, but West Virginia held a 24-8 advantage to close the first period.
The Mountaineers scored a jumper to start the second quarter, but Bristow nailed a 3-pointer to get Tech to double digits. By the 6:20 mark, Tech held West Virginia to just four points and Maupin scored another three to cut into the WVU lead, 28-15. During that span, Bristow also recorded two blocks to tie her season high. The Mountaineers scored 14 of the last 16 points to end the quarter with a 42-17 lead.
WVU opened the third period on an 8-2 run until Merritt scored the next seven points for the Lady Raiders in a span of a minute and a half, but the Mountaineers hit a 3-pointer in response. Coming out of the media timeout, Sarengbe Sanogo connected with a free throw to make it 55-27 in WVU's favor. Jada Wynn knocked down the next two shots for the Lady Raiders with a 3-pointer and a tough layup at the end of the period, but West Virginia held the lead at 66-41. The Mountaineers scored the first five points of the final quarter, until Shavers made two free throws. WVU went on a 7-0 run after this, then held on to that lead as they won the game by a score of 89-53.
Up next, the Lady Raiders continue play at the United Supermarkets Arena on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. for a game against No. 11 TCU. Â
