Texas Tech takes on No. 11 TCU
January 10, 2025 | Women's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders continue play at home with a game against the TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday, January 11 at 6 p.m. at the United Supermarkets Arena. Texas Tech leads the all-time series against TCU with a 49-15 record. The Lady Raiders have won four of the last five games versus the Horned Frogs, splitting last year's matchups.
Texas Tech (12-5, 1-3 Big 12) is looking to win its second conference game of the season and these are the three keys to doing that. First, the Lady Raiders need to shoot 40 percent or better from the field, going 10-1 in games with at least that percentage. Second, Tech needs to get to the free throw line and make more free throws than TCU. The Lady Raiders are 7-1 in games with more free throw attempts and 6-1 when making more free throws. Lastly, the Lady Raiders need to make 28 or more field goals. Tech has made a season-best 28 field goals in four games (Houston, SFA, Missouri State, New Orleans) and won each of those.
In 2024, Texas Tech played seven games against ranked opponents - winning one of those against No. 24 Iowa State on Jan. 17, 2024 by a 71-63 score. In addition, head coach Krista Gerlich has picked up at least one ranked win in each season she's been at the helm of the Lady Raiders. Texas Tech is looking to defeat a No. 11-ranked team for the first time in program history - falling in all seven games against No. 11s in the past.
The Lady Raiders currently average 5.6 blocks per game, which ranks 12th nationally and fourth in the Big 12. In addition, junior Sarengbe Sanogo ranks 19th in the nation and third in the Big 12 with 32 total blocks. The Lady Raiders are forcing 20.53 turnovers per game which ranks 46th in the NCAA and second in the conference, and they also rank 57th nationally with 10.4 steals per game. The Lady Raiders have forced 20+ turnovers in eight games this season so far, and average 17.8 turnovers forced per game in conference play.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The No. 11-ranked TCU Horned Frogs are 16-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play, just one of two teams in the Big 12 to remain undefeated. The Horned Frogs have key wins over No. 13 NC State, No. 3 Notre Dame, Colorado and Kansas. Their one loss was against South Carolina by an 85-52 score on December 8. TCU is averaging 82.4 points per game, which ranks 20th in the nation, and is only allowing 54.1 points per game, which checks in at 14th nationally. TCU is ranked second in the NCAA with a 1.83 assist to turnover ratio, while also ranking at fourth with 6.5 blocks per game. They only average 11.1 turnovers per game, which is good for fifth nationally, and make 10.1 threes per game which is good for seventh in the nation. They are led in scoring by three Horned Frogs who average double-figures ®– Sedona Prince (18.1), Hailey Van Lith (17.9) and Madisen Conner (16.3). Prince also leads the team in blocks (57), double-doubles (7) and rebounds per game (9.4), while ranking first nationally in blocks.
